Post Office Telephone/Broadband

[link to this post]

I'm fed up with BT from whom I get my 'phone, it is their customer service
that as upset me. They speak with strong Indian accents and very hard to
understand. I have a charging issue with them they do not seem to know
answers to my questions, e-mails take days to answer.

So many different packages my head spins.

Now I have heard of the Post Office with its single tariff and it just reads as if
written for me and sounds cheaper, so could well be going over to them. I sort of tested their CS by 'phone, they answered quickly and were in the UK. I e-mailed and got same day response.

My broadband is with Tesco which the present contact runs out in August I
do get good service from them but they do not have the speeds that these new
providers offer. I pay Tesco 20 for their fastest unlimited speed of 1mb, get 0.9 mb as a minimum.
The PO have Broadband and would be 6x or more faster, but
their unlimited is subject to fair usage, my Tesco is truely unlimited.

Anyone with the PO broadband unlimited, can you tell me how their fair usage
effects?
I'm a heavy user as I play an internet game, I used 25GB in February.
What happens with these fair usages in general does it slow down by a little, a lot?
Does it last long or a short time?
Thanks for any info.

Love, June

Can't help with your question re Post Office broadband.

Can you get any of the LLU ISPs at your exchange? For instance Be do "unlimited" broadband for 14 a month.

Hi,
Yes my exhange is on that list.
As I said I'm on Tesco 1mb no limits, just looked at Tesco web site, then relooked at my leaflet, guess what they are different for the one package above me.
The next is thier "Finest", leaflet is as I told you 2mb 20gb limit, BUT web says Unlimited.
Also web site says free speed upgrade as they become available to you. Is this the system, LLU you are telling me about?
Tesco used to use NTL as subcontractor, who are now Virgin Media I think, but Tesco told me they not using Virgin. Anyone tell me who they use now and does this firm do your LLU? Might be that prior to August things will change, after August I not have to pay 70 to leave. Mind you Finest is 25 so for 2mb is not attractive but if it were the up to 8mb would have to be considered, allthough at first glance competition seems cheaper, but I do know Tesco for me is reliable. These others allmost all say "fair useage" Tesco do not have this for me.

Love, June

LLU stands for Local Loop Unbundled and means that an ISP has put their own kit in your local BT exchange. This means that you can get practically unlimited for a decent price.

The two decent LLU companies are Be/O2 and Sky (with Sky you have to include a Sky TV package).

Mind you, by August, things may have changed.

I don't know who Tesco use to deliver their service (BT perhaps?).

The Post Office line rental + inclusive evening/weekend calls + Broadband Extra costs from 25.95 per month (depends on payment method). This should compare well with 20 to Tesco and 10.50 to BT for line rental.

Broadband Extra says "unlimited monthly downloads" but as with all these things that probably doesn't mean you can download hundreds of GB per month without consequences. 25 GB should be fine. 12 month contract.
