I think I'm a heavy user. I'd like a better ISP

[link to this post]

Afternoon all. I have just requested a MAC code from my current ISP (Namesco). I haven't been happy with their support or service.

Anyway, I used to be pretty clued up on ISP's but from what I've seen scouring today, I'm out of my element now.

I currently pay 25/month, which is on the high side, and I'd rather not pay so much for sub-par service. A couple of pounds a month off this price would be great.

I don't play games online too much, but I am known to occasionally kick into CS:S.

There is no LLU service available on my exchange, not even Sky or AOL.

My monthly usage has been as follows (thanks to the Namesco usage graph):

I'm quite willing to have a reasonable peak time usage limit, and a larger/unlimited (lol) night time limit. I'd rather not get traffic shaped or port blocked.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

looks like 2 choices, pay a lot of money, or go with entanet (vivaciti, adsl24 etc..) 30gb peak, 300 offpeak, 20/month, no port blocking/traditional traffic shaping, but there is the ALT which can (and does) slow speeds down for a couple of hours at the start of the offpeak, and a few hours a day over the weekend (slowdown can be as low as 2mbs)

We (PlusNet) can offer 20gb per month from 8am - midnight with usage outside those hours not counted towards your total, if that would suit? The cost would be 19.99 a month.

Details here if you're interested.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Those options look pretty good, I can handle scheduled downloading.

Any impartial users reccomend Plusnet or Entanet resellers?

Oh, I take it these usage limits apply over the weekends?

i use vivacity (entanet) and am happy. usage does include uploads and weekends, plenty of PN users here who'll say the same, so really its a case of whose package suits you best..
pn have their very clear traffic shaping, enta have their anti-loss-tool (ALT), both have their advantages/disadvantages.

Can anyone provide further information on this Anti Loss tool?

Also, isn't it funny that the day I request a MAC code is the best day of service I've had from Names. I'm currently downloading at 600k. The best speed I've seen in months..

From what I gather, the ALT throttles connections gradually when the network gets congested, in order to make sure that all users get at least 2-meg connections, and that time-critical stuff like VOIP and gaming isn't affected by higher ping times. Despite what at least one person has implied in the past, they won't use it to throttle everyone's connections arbitrarily (or at least they say they won't)

Yeah plus net DO offer 20Gb per month from 8 till midnight their speeds are throttled back till at least 2am though and they also start extra throttling back on your speeds when tou reach 13Gb and further throttling when you reach 17Gb too. They do not mention this in ANY of their terms etc.so their 20Gb allowance is a sham.

I speak from experience as i am a plus net customer ( needless to say i am looking elsewhere)

Hi there,

From the figures you mention I'm guessing you're on the old Premier package, with different levels of management at different usage levels.

The new Broadband Your Way accounts do not have any progressive management within your allowance so your speeds are as detailed here unless you exceed your allowance.

If you're on an older product you can move to a newer product without charge.

The ALT sounds better than other shaping methods.

PlusNet are sounding good to me. Probably go with them when I get my MAC code.
