o2 broadband - are there any official or unoffical

[link to this post]

Hi folks,

Currently have mobile and broadband contract with Orange, all is ok, except Orange's download limit of 40-50gb is a bit low for me, my contract is expiring in the next couple of months, so have been looking around for a new deal, I have been looking at o2 as they have a 15 tariff for the mobile side of things which would do all i need, and I was thinking of combining this with o2's 'standard' broadband package as my exchange doesn't support over 8mbit as of yet, my question is this - does anyone know if o2 have set any official or unofficial download limits on their 'unlimited' broadband service, I download between 40 and 100gb per month, generally between 10pm and 7am.

Many Thanks, Vaughn.

Although O2's "standard"`package is only "up to 8Mb", it is still an ADSL2+ "up to 24Mb" technology. Where did you see that your exchange does not support over 8Mbps? Have a look here and look for LLU enabled ISPs, then tell us if there is Sky or Be/O2.

For your downloads assuming you are right that only BT IPStream is available, (BT Wholesale Max), which is the "up to 8Mb" service that nearly all the ISPs offer, then an Entanet reseller such as ADSL24 or vivaciti would be your best bet at 19.99.

This is the output from the link you gave.

Congratulations, you are in a broadband enabled area.
However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.

The following services are available in your location:

BT Wholesale ADSL
BT Wholesale ADSL Max
TalkTalk (CPW) LLU

Please select the options on the left for more information about broadband availability at your location.

In which case O2 is not available, it is only available where the 02/Be LLU network is.

The checker on http://broadband.o2.co.uk/ will confirm this.

That's fine. It does confirm what you said, but people often take as gospel something their ISP tells them. So forgive me . The warning at the start about another service is your existing broadband. Mine says the same. It doesn't mean you cannot migrate.

What it also means is that you cannot get O2 and your best broadband deal for high downloads is an Entanet reseller like I said. The 19.99 package gives 30GB peak and 300GB off-peak which starts at 10pm and all weekend.

The downside is that Entanet sometimes applies a blanket restriction on speed from any of their Centrals at busy times. See here. You can often get round it by disconnecting and reconnecting. Have a browse of the Entanet forum. It's the penalty for the large allowances at a reasonable price.

Your alternatives are to pay a lot more for Newnet, IDNet or Zen. See this comparisons. These three give high speeds pretty well all the time.

I'm afraid that leaves you with a separate provision for your mobile, but is the best option otherwise.

The checker seems to be down at present.
