Moving to an area with a non LLU enabled exchange

[link to this post]

Hi

For the past four years I have enjoyed various unlimited and highly stable packages from companies such as Bulldog, Sky and Be. All of which offered unlimited usage.

Having just checked which exchange my new flat is connected to using samknows, (Liverpool North) even though I'm in the City Centre.

This exchange only has around 6000 connections so I guess the LLU providers wont be in a hurry to install their systems.

There is one LLU provider available, "Talk Talk" but the servious seems revolting to say the least. I realise I am going to end up on some resold BT IPStream Max product, which even though it's a speed increase I'd be con#tent if it actually worked.

Basically, I need

- Unlimited Downloads (none of this 5gb a month nonsense, AUP ok as long as I can download unrestricted during off-peak times)

- No annoying traffic shaping or blocking of ports.

I'm willing to pay a decent price for such a connection, The 'free' or £9.99 offers don't attract me at all.

Just wondering whether anyone can recommend decent non LLU ISP which is aimed at web-geeks and not online bankers.

So far I have identified Orange as a candidate and ideas?

An Entanet reseller such as ADSL24 or vivaciti.

Re Orange, go read their forum and ISP Unhappiness here. First look at this.

Bob: BT Broadband >> Prodigynet >> Newnet Lite.
Purple Cloud for domain reg/hosting, email hosting and now also web space.

Agreed, on a BT IPStream platform, you're unlikely to get a better overall package than a 30GB peak/300GB off-peak (20) or 60GB peak/330GB off-peak product from Entanet.

I would not go with orange as they traffic shape, as most of the big isps do..
But it realy is your usage that is important when picking a isp idnet do a very good package and give there users a good constant speed but not such big usage caps,
But if you think you got heavy off peak usage there really is only one choice if you only got ipstream at your exchange and that will be one of the enta reseller, i expect one of them will post on your thread, 19.99 a month gets you 30gig peak and 300gig off peak..
Or if you say your a bit of a Internet geek office45 will hopefully pull your chain with its increased up stream speed and lower contention, you get 45gig peak and 300gig off peak for about 30 a month..
Both come with a choice of static ip options and the ability to set your own host name if you have your own domain..
But there is a down side to enta with its huge usage caps is that it does slow when going off peak from 10pm in the evening and parts of the weekend also but they have a way of stopping packet loss and stopping the centrals going into the black by reducing every body connection speed, but always nearly leaving you with a perfect 2mb of unshaped un port throttled connection..
Off peak nearly always runs at you maximum connected speed, as i see it the only other problem is thay dont do free connection but the upside of this is your not tied into a 12 month contract...
But my best bit of advice is to scroll down the forums till you see the "User comments on ISPs" and go read whats going on with that isp before you jump in with a contract...

If you want unlimited and you're not concerned about price then IDNET business packages might suit you. One of the best isp's around and highly regarded. Everything is UK based and all free support.

Check them out.
