Need 6 months of Broadband - Recommendations?

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I've been living in a rented flat for last 6 months during which time I've been using-up the time that remained on the landlord's broadband/phone line contracts (both from BT). They've both just run out and I'm looking to set up a new broadband connection (I'm not bothered about the phoneline except as is necessary to get broadband).

The complication is that I'll only be in the flat for less than another 6 months and so don't really want to pay for a minimum 12 month contract!

Does anyone have any advice?

Many thanks!

Simon

Freeola are currently offering activation for 10 and any tarrif for the first month at 10 all on a monthly contract. Freeola are Entanet resellers so the service will be pretty good.
They are however a little more expensive than other Entanet resellers so you could take advantage of the 10 activation and 10 for the first month then move elsewhere if you wanted to. Zen, other Entanet resellers, IDNet and Newnet all offer monthly contracts and have very good reputations. Plusnet also offer monthly contracts and seem to be improving and might be a decent bet if you can live with their traffic shaping.

Regards,
Steve

Thanks for the advice - I'll look into those companies.

Is there anyway around have to sign-up for a minimum 12 month contract on the BT phoneline itself?

Won't the landlord keep the phone going and you just pay him for it? Considering it is going to cost you at least 100 to get one yourself, perhaps you could offer him a little incentive instead?

How much bandwidth do you use. Quite a bit I assume, but if it isn't a lot, how about wireless broadband? Not cheap, but you have a lot of expense coming up with a new landline which you would avoid.

Hi there,

We could do both Home Phone and broadband on a monthly contract.

You can view our products here but give us a shout if you have any questions.

That looks quite good Mand . There are frequent requests for short-term contracts by students and people only in the country part of the time and that looks ideal as long as they read past the cheap offers on the 12-month contracts. (The first time that reading the small print confers a benefit?).

Not sure in the OP's case though. It looks as though the phone line will not be available for transfer, though possibly you could pick it up quick enough to avoid an Openreach connection charge?

I'n not trying to queer the pitch. It's just so I and no doubt others can point future posters in your direction if there is a way round the connection charge where there may not be a line as recently defunct as this one.

Hi there,

Thanks for the feedback, always helps.

Regards the phone line, the charge for activation would depend on the current status. Obviously placing an order as quickly as possible is best.

For a working line we do not charge a fee, for a stopped line we pass on the Openreach charge of 38.75, as we do for a complete new provide (105 charged).

To me that looks like the best deal around for the OP.

(Just for my info - what's a "stopped line"?).

A stopped line is one which is still fully connected from an exchange level, but is cancelled from a service provider level.

You can usually tell that the line is stopped because there should be a dial tone.

Thanks for the info.

I suspect my line is stopped as there was still a dial tone last time I checked.

Is the openreach charge you mentioned covered by the 40 broadband connection fee or in addition to it?
