ISP for elderly.

[link to this post]

Hi there.

Some elderly relatives of mine have just picked up a cheap laptop and want to start surfing the web. The only LLU services they have on their exchange are Orange and they have Sky+ TV.

I think sky for 17.99 is a little too much as I doubt they will use 1Gb a month tbh.

Any recommendations guys? Router needs to be included. Hard coded with username and password if possible.

Thanks.

Plusnet Option 1 is probably as good as you'll get; wireless router and 2GB for a tenner a month.

Hi, the Post Office looks good and can be paid for at the Post Office counters, no Direct Debit required.

Post Office Broadband Standard from 15.95 per month. NO extra charges.

Bridport.

I was thinking plusnet too.

How much configuring will need to be done to get them up and running!?

Oer here at Zen we have a system called SmartStart which we ship with most new routers bought from us. It would just be a case of plugging in the router via microfilter and turning it on. Wait 5 minutes for the router to contact our server and then the router automatically configures itself based on the serial number it has.

Tech Support can help with getting them up and running with email etc.

I am slightly disturbed by the apparent ageism of this thread . Rapidly approaching my 3 score & 10 I regard configuring an ADSL modem/router as being a trivial task.

It would be kinder perhaps to refer to your relatives as having limited IT skills, a description that fits my next door neighbour who is young enough to be my son and to whom I have recently explained the mysteries of broadband.

PS. I would endorse the PlusNet suggestion, they are great for the elderly

Surely you don't mean the elderly. You mean people with the maturity and sense to use the internet for useful purposes rather than grab all you can and never mind if you (have time in the rest of your life to) ever look at a tenth of it .
