Should I stay with Timewarp

[link to this post]

Im currently with Timewarp ISP on 8meg I achieve about 6.5/7meg during downloads via Newsgroup access from NewsDemon. I download approximately 50Gb per month not including general net usage and gaming PC/Console multiplayer, so my usage is very high and Timewarp have always allowed me to continue my high usage over the last 5years.

8meg is Timewarps highest package and I would like to find an ISP that can provide higher speeds with similar usage allowance.

High usage
Faster speed
Upload speed not important
Price 35 maximum

If you want faster downloads then your choices are pretty much limited to either Be/O2 or Sky/UK Online unless you're served by one of the few exchanges Newnet have LLU'd. Entanet offer an ADSL2+ product if your exchange has been 21CN enabled by BT but that's a bit of a risky option as BT 21CN doesn't look like a stable product yet.
What does Samknows say is available on your exchange?

Well it looks like Be/O2 or Sky/UK Online are your choices.
If you already have Sky TV and don't mind a 12 month contract then Sky Max 16Mb for 10 a month is an attractive option but be aware you have to use the kit they supply and if you use their email system everything will have @sky.com on the outgoing mails even if you have your own domain. No static IP option if that is important.
UK Online will give you 16Mb for 25 a month, no restrictions on what kit you use and I think you get a static IP on their top package but again a 12 month contract.
Be/O2 is the same network marketed differently, go to the O2 forum and find a recent post by MKD and check out his comparison document.
Don't sign up for Be just because they offer a 24Mb product, if your line can only handle 15Mb then 24Mb is no advantage, post your line stats to see what speeds can be expected.
Personally I'd go for Be/O2 as they don't insist on 12 month contracts but you pays your money you makes your choices.

Steve

Thanks Steve

I can't post my line stats until tonight, at work.

What's the advantage of a static IP? and is there any reason why you have to use Sky's hardware, how do they make it so you can only use there hardware?

From what I understand, the router comes with your username and password encoded into it, and you don't get to know what that is. Therefore, you have to use their equipment.

Re static IP addresses, basically if you need to ask they are of no real benefit, they are useful if you want to run a server or access your network remotely amongst other things.
As shielder has already said your username and password is embedded in the Sky router and the firmware locked down so you can't easily get to the information, but I'm sure hacks are available to get them if you really want to use another router. However if you ever need to contact Sky tech support they will be expecting you to be using their router, and you're in breach of the T&C's if you don't.

O2 is 12-month minimum term. Be Unlimited and Pro are 3-month rolling.

Bob: Demon dialup >> Freeserve dialup >> BT Broadband >> Prodigynet >> Newnet >> O2 Standard.

O2 let you pay a 50 fine to leave early do they not? UKO and Sky insist on the full 12 months being paid up.
I guess I just don't look at it as a 12 month contract if I can pay a modest exit fee to terminate early. The ones that insist on full payment are the killers, and remain the sole reason why I haven't signed up with UK Online yet.

Steve
