Good ISP in Pompey

[link to this post]

So i've been with Bulldog since I moved into my flat. Everything was fine until they got taken over by Pipex. It had a bit of a wobble when they were first taken over and then seemed to sort outself out until a few weeks ago when it started slowing down every evening. I was told maintenace was being done but digging a bit further it looks like they're moving people off the old Bulldog system (Cable and Wireless) and putting them back on the old BT exchange to save money.

The upshot is I'm looking to move but I'm not sure who to. I download a fair bit (I watch a lot of NHL via a subscription to ESPN360) so would be looking for something unlimited with no traffic shaping. Speed wise I was getting a steady 7 meg connection with Bulldog and that was more than enough. Any suggestions?
According to Sam Knows AOL, O2 / Be, Newnet, Orange, Sky / Easynet and Talk Talk all have presense in the local exchange. As I already have Sky and O2 those would probably be favorite - any opinions or experiances would be welcome.

Also what's the best way to minimise downtime. My phone is also with Pipex and is a non BT line (again it's the old Bulldog / Cable & Wireless setup). Not bothered about keeping the number, is it best to get a whole new line put in and when the new lines in and running cut off Pipex?

Be/O2 or Sky are probably the best.

It is possible to transfer back to BT for free e.g. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=...

Another vote for Be/O2 and Sky. Sky would likely be cheaper, Be are more flexible and O2 probably have the edge on support.

If Newnet LLU is available it would be my choice, unlimited usage, up to 24Mb up/1.3Mb down with static IP and a 1 month contract for £19.49. OK it isn't as cheap as O2/Be but the 1 month contract is not to be sneezed at.

Good thinking re Newnet, (by the way get your ups and downs right tongue), but I'm not sure I agree when comparing them with O2.

At the moment O2 is offering a free month and £70 cashback through Quidco. Allied to a 30-day money-back getout clause I think it is worth the 12-month minimum term.

Also it seems Newnet have some odd upstream profiling system of their own.

Bob: Demon dialup >> Freeserve dialup >> BT Broadband >> Prodigynet >> Newnet >> O2 Standard.
