Moving From Virgin To ... ?

[link to this post]

Good Morning all!

I am about to cancel my Virgin contract (not out of choice!) as I am moving to a different area that doesnt have cable frown
I'm not actually happy about this as I cant fault the price or the service I am getting with Virgin! The broadband from them has been awesome - 10meg service reaching top speeds 99% of the time! Never been capped on downloads either wink I am a heavy downloader - in terms of music, I'd say around 40/50GB a month.

So ... I am looking for a new provider currently! We are going to sign up with Sky for the TV, and maybe the landline, but if I get the landline through Sky do I HAVE to use them for internet too as I've read their service is pretty awful (various posts on here and other forums!).

I need a pretty fast service, 4meg will do in all honesty as I think that is the best I will get in the area I am moving to anyway - but i cant be doing with any stupid capping etc! I do have a Netgear wireless router already which can be used, but am open to new options!

Price-wise? Well, the Sky will be around £35 a month so for the internet around £10 tops I guess ...

Not really sure where to go with this, but I will be sending my cancellation letter to Virgin (sadly!) later this week!

Skys internet is bad only if you don't have Sky/Easynet LLU at your new exchange. Put your new postcode in here to check.

TT are horrible. They overload their exchanges.

Another vote for Be/O2. Look in either forum on this site and find a post by MKD. In his sig there is a link to his excellent comparison of the two, including the current money saving/back deals.

With Sky phone, the line still classes as BT for this purpose. You are just paying Sky the rental and calls.

Hi - I'm also leaving Virgin on cable (20mb) to somewhere without cable, or it looks like much else. Exchange is Fritwell http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/SMFW

Myself and my partner are pretty heavy users, working from home a fair bit, so we're going to miss the 20mb - are there alternatives to ADSL worth looking at in a rural location?
What do you wise folks think?

Depending on budget and amount of allowance needed, look at:-

ADSL24 - scroll three-quarters down the page to links to the new Home and Business packages.
(They are an Entanet reseller. Currently fairly big problems with IPSC, which you would be on, see the Entanet forum on this site. It looks like these problems may be on the way to resolution.)

Zen
IDNet
(Both of these seem to have recently had or are having minor problems but have excellent reputations.)

Newnet Home, Business or Office
(Note the Home M and Home S packages get unmetered midnight to 7am from 1 April.)

Here's a useful comparison. Note the huge drop in Entanet in January. February figures are not showing at the time I post this.

RobertoS, I am currently looking to move ISP and was wondering where did the information regarding the packages on Newnet changing to unmetered was from as I can't seem to find this mentioned on their website?

Thanks

Ack! I made a small mistake - it is 2am-7am, not from midnight, sorry. Apart from that, start at this thread. It isn't in the first post, and the actual statement isn't actually in the thread either. The statement is in this post, with the clarification that it is only Home M & S elsewhere (as that post was a reply to a user on Home M). Browse around those two threads.

PeterPerfect is the CEO (and owner I think) of Newnet, so what he says is usually reliable. In this case I'm sure it is, but if you intend to sign up before it's on the website I suggest you PM him and get personal confirmation. Sales and support may waffle, though I suppose you could try them. better in writing from soemone though, rather than a phone call.
