moving house - new ISP?

[link to this post]

Hi

I wonder if I could ask for a bit of advice ?

Currently on BT home phone with pipex ADSL on rural BTmax exchange.
Moving home very shortly but just down the road - same exchange - BT will transfer our number to the new line.

Pipex is terribly slow and I want to move - is it just a matter of telling them to cease (i'm on i month notice) ? and getting another ISP on our new line ? or will keeping our phone number number make it difficult ? (last time we moved pipex took 6 weeks to restart service ...)

Also any suggestions about ISP - I gather i'm limited to BT or BT wholesale - moderately heavy home user (but no P2P) evenings and weekends. speed and reliability important.
Currently paying about £25 for slow pipex with (very slow DNS)

Thanks everyone

Jono

You're moving house so it's not a migration so you might as well cancel Pipex (if it was a migration you'd get a MAC and connection to a new ISP would normally be free).

I'd look at NewNet as your new ISP as long as you're a light to medium level downloader (sub 15GB or so per month).

Do you have any idea of your monthly usage?

Has anyone unbundled your exchange? See http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php

Thanks
So it sounds like I can get activated within about a week of moving - great ?

Probably just on or slightly over the 15gig mark - its an adsl max only exchange with no LLU

i'll look at newnet - any other suggestions for a slightly bigger limit ?

many thanks

J

The Newnet Home S package is by far the best under 20GB ISP though slightly pricey if you go for a monthly contract instead of an annual one paid in advance.

As all Newnet Home packages now have a short unmetered period 2-7am, if you can schedule any larget downloads to happen then you may get away with Home M, but I wouldn't like to risk it.

Particularly as the usage checking for the unmetered period is hard to optimise - there is a thread running in the Newnet forum here at the moment which discusses it.

Note Newnet count uploads as well as downloads towards your allowance.

It might be worth a phone call to Newnet to see what would happen if you migrated immediately at the old address then got that moved to the new one. That could be quicker and cheaper than paying Pipex a cease fee, which you would probably have to do, and then a connect fee to Newnet at the new place.

Bob: Demon dialup >> Freeserve dialup >> BT Broadband >> Prodigynet >> Newnet >> O2 Standard.

20 gig for 20 quid sounds pretty good..

best to cancel pipex and sign up after we move ?, or migrate (but may not be enough time to do that - moving next week) and then move ?

thanks

Re: moving house - gold star for pipex !?!

Did I really say that ?
last time we moved they were terrible
still leaving them when we move shortly as extremely slow connection...

called the cancellation line - who told me i had taken out a new 12 month contract last Dec so would face big cancelletion charge (from when tiscali took over) - gave me the number for customer services and suggested I sort it out before cancelling. Phoned cust serv who with very little persuasion said they will honour my 1 month notice period. Phoned the cancellation line again who could see the discussion and gave me cancellation ref and also ref for confirmation of 1 month notice in case I get wrongly billed.
Pipex CS gets terrible press round the forums but they were great today.

So now need fast service with about 15gig a month - rural exchange ADSL max only so will look at newnet & titan - any other suggestions ?

thanks

You don't say how your use of the line works out daytime vs. evening - I'm with Andrews & Arnold ("AAISP") and while their daytime usage looks expensive if you're home all day, the evening/overnight/weekend allowance is huge (at least 50GB/month).
I'm on their lowest (1G daytime) package, and despite being home most days I almost never exceed it - and you can carry forward up to 100% of your allowance either under or over each month, so if you have a busy month you can carry the over-use forward for no extra charge, and if you have a quiet month you get extra "free" in the next month.
And they have graphs so you can check how you're doing any time - also handy for spotting anomalies (I had someone permanently "watching" my garden-camera recently, and the graph showed it clearly, allowing me to block them).
I've been with them since ADSL became available here, and never regretted it. They're also on 1-month's notice, so if you really don't like it you can move quickly.

Certainly worth looking at!
