ISP with Short Contract AND dynamic IP addresses?

I'm looking for a broadband deal that offers the following:

1) TRULY Dynamic IP addresses. Why are ISPs obsessed with static IPs? "Great for gaming" is also "Great for criminals who target your fixed IP address, and know everything about you!". Some ISPs offer "dynamic" IPs that very rarely change ... what's the point?!

2) Short contract. 12 and 18 month contracts are fecking outrageous!

I've looked at all of the big players, including NewNet, ADSL24, Plusnet, and numerous others. They only offer fixed IP addresses these days. The remainder are companies like TalkTalk and Tiscali, who are merging in any case.

Please advise!

I thought the main reason for wanting a dynamic address was to get round bans on sex chat sites, or other sites that don't like the attitude you seem to be displaying here. I assume when you get angry your language gets even worse?

I have had a fixed Ip address for over 4 years and have never been targetted , compromised or had any other problems with it. With a dynamic ip you can sometimes get and address that has ben blacklisted on certain sites.

If you have a router then you have even more protection with a fixed ip anyway.

Try IDNET 1 month contract, well respected and with FIXED ip addresses.

I think you'll find that RobertOS has a pretty good grasp of networks and IP. The reality is that fixed IPs have very little additional security problems than dynamic and has already been mentioned dynamic can be more problematic - especially where someone who had the address has been banned from sites and therefore you hit their ban.

Am also not convinced that RobertOS was slanderous in any way. He said that they are usually wanted for getting round bans - didn't say that was why you wanted it.

Personally been on fixed IP for about 8 years now and not had problems. If someone is collecting all information about me then they are making a very poor show of using it.

And the only real reason that dynamic IPs came available was due to lack of IP address space. With IPV6 (if it ever gets properly rolled out) it is likely that dynamic IPs will become a thing of the past.

Im sure ADSL24 eould be happy to assign you a dynamic address. It would also be saving them money so I don't think they would complain!

And that, clearly isn't an answer, it is a deflection because in reality I suspect you don't really know either - but you've decided that you're safer with a dynamic IP address as this keeps changing. Ultimately, it doesn't really matter if you're the target of a 'hacker'. The important bit is, do you have a decent firewall?

I've used fixed IP addresses for years. I have a Netgear router, with a built in firewall as well as a software firewall. I've never had a cause for concern.

I think SAQ or ICUK do dynamic IP addresses however.

For a dynamic IP to offer security it needs to alter for every single IP request, with an internet connection it only needs milliseconds for something to get onto a machine.

Use of a dynamic IP as a security tool is a waste of time.

In the real world its akin to changing your front door lock every day, because one day someone might pick it.
