LLU/ADSL2+ or ADSL for low ping?

[link to this post]

I was about to sign up for PlusNet's Pro package until I discovered you're stuck with them for 12 months regardless of how the service is.

With this in mind I looked at Entanet resellers, ADSL24's "Availability Checker" told me I'd get 3.5Mb with ADSL and 4.5Mb with ADSL2+/LLU.
To me, it seems better to go with the cheaper, 1 month contract, entanet/ADSL service they offer but does anyone know if I'm likely to get better pings with ADSL2+/LLU and if they'd be significant enough to make compromises?

If you have any other suggestions for ISPs I'd welcome them, low pings are my priority but a short contract, reliability and no port blocking/shaping are high up the list too.

Adsl vs Adsl2 doesn't affect ping. It's influenced by your ISP's route and the method between you and the exchange (fastpath / interleaved).

I am now on LLU unlimited with no FUP with Vivaciti, my ping hasn't changed I was with ADSL24 through BT network and the IP Profiling System done my head in, hence the change.

If you have got cable and wireless llu in your exchange you might want to have a look at Vivaciti? £20 set up fee which is wavered if you stay with them 3 months, if you leave within that time you pay the other £20. So far they have been very good.

LLU - £21.85

Depends where your pinging and the ISPs routing. I noticed my ping fell 20% around the time on 21CN at my exchange, but this might of just been a coincidence because my ping was inflated to begin with.

I do indeed have C&W LLU enabled on my exchange (Sanderstead/LSSAN) but I am quite some distance from it, so you think the ping will be the same but have a faster connection more often?

My main concern with this connection is for reliable, low-latency gaming but having higher download rates is also desirable... is the 'IP Profiling System' you mention where speeds are lowered in 500kb/s increments to stop a pipe from dropping packets (I see as a good thing, for gaming) or some other type of shaping or restriction?

There is a good section on this site about IP Profile, have a look at it Here
With LLU services there is no IP Profile system in place.
The thing you are referring to is the way Entanet manage their network (others may use the same method but I am not aware of any)

Thanks for the info, having looked through your forums it seems those who've migrated to the LLU service are getting higher pings than before. Can you confirm this to be expected behaviour?

I am quite a heavy gamer (4-5 hrs a day) since going over to LLU ping times have remained constant at around 50-60 on uk servers, I didn't see any difference going over to LLU.

Hi Benbird7

What are your line stats - sync speed?

Thinking of move to back to LLU as my current ISP moved my off there LLU to BT21CN. Now connection slower that whenI was on BT ADSLmax a number of years ago.

I'm on Vivaciti LLU.

Here's my stats:

DownStream Connection Speed 12139 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 1023 kbps

Speed test 10.3Mb down, 840Kb up

Pinging www.jolt.co.uk [84.234.17.86] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 84.234.17.86: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=116
Reply from 84.234.17.86: bytes=32 time=28ms TTL=116
Reply from 84.234.17.86: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=116
Reply from 84.234.17.86: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=116

Ping statistics for 84.234.17.86:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 28ms, Maximum = 30ms, Average = 29ms

Been with Vivacti on their LLU service since it was first offered. I'm very happy. Speeds are constantly good, 100% reliability (after 2 months service), pings have remained as above every time I've checked.

I would highly recommend the service.
