Help me find a new ISP ASAP!

[link to this post]

In advance this is greatly appreciated; I have tomorrow to cancel my UKOnline contract before the 10day policy kicks in and Im stuck for 12 months!!!

Hi there guys; unfortunately as a first note; I'm on a longer line (line stats in the region of 2.5-4meg connection max), and my exchange is a crippled one with no LLU or ADSL2+, only ADSL MAX. My exchange is Woburn Sands.

Im basically looking for a new ISP ASAP/Urgently.

Originally I was on Entanet via UKFSN on the other telephone line (which is being removed); so we transfered over to UKOnline; as it seemed a better deal; FUP limits, rather than the hard limits of Enta, which were useful as the family take on foster kids; and well they're not as respectful of internet limits as they could be; not to mention they CAN be expensive.

Unfortunately; it seems whilst UKOnline's CS is very good; thier non-LLU service is pretty terrible; and obviously oversubscribed [even on an IP profile of 2500 right now, Im struggling to pull much more than 1MB when line testing]; lag spikes in games, and poor throughput, as well as higher pings than Enta are order of the day, I have been fighting with the line since it was activated; and I've had enough.

Because of a hiccup with the family running cables around; the line only began being used last wednesday...problem being they have a 10 day cancellation period...I have tomorrow to cancel with them and request a MAC code. I don't really want to be stuck with the level of service for 12 months; nor do the rest of my family who actually use the internet for more than email/light surfing!

Can anyone recommend a good, BT ADSL Max based ISP, beyond Zen/IDnet who are pretty expensive and unfortunately beyond the family considering worth paying ...doh!

Ideally; they won't cap P2P unecessarily, decent pings, and a not completely merciless FUP. I don't mind some limitations; but not 5GB download a month!

It might be back to Enta at this rate!

Alex

You could take a look at vivaciti's non-Enta based Surfwise 75 - which is an FUP not a fixed cap, and I believe open to some negotiation from what they posted on these forums when announcing it some months back.

Edit - if you want to ask others about it you should post in Resellers and Other Providers forum not Entanet. Or on vivaciti's internal forum.

Bob: Demon dialup >> Freeserve dialup >> BT Broadband >> Prodigynet >> Newnet >> O2 Standard.
Purple Cloud for domain, email and web space.

if you can't get cable, then plusnet pro or entanet. avoid vivaciti.

If you do go to Vivaciti's own forum here may be a warning shot across the bows.

Thanks for the help guys; it looks like I'm going to return to Enta under ADSL24's family 60 package. I was always pretty happy on the old line under the office 45 pack with UKFSN, so I can't see why I'll have any issues; and the ALT meant that packet loss and general line ping and stability stayed good; even in peak times (well for a non-LLU provider).
The contention/upload are weaker and the free period is smaller; but it'll cover out those extra bandwidth spikes which caught us a few times under UKFSN. The only reason I didnt return to them is because of a few rumours of impending doom, and ADSL24 seem to be the next best at the moment.

To UKOnlines credit; when I spoke to them earlier, the lady I spoke to named Rosie in CS was helpful, listened to my issue (packet loss and low thoughput even for my profile; outside of peak hours) and also agreed to put a note on my account so that I could take a MAC now; and still be able to cancel when the MAC goes through, as I'd be outside the normal 10 day cooling down period. It's a shame really; as the tech support weren't bad either; helping me get an interleaving change made in under 12 hours; which is very fast for a BT action, and also rang me back as promised; I get the feeling if I'd had LLU available they would have been a great ISP; thier IPStream product just doesn't cut it though (early using BT speed tester, on a line profile of 2500 I couldn't even manage 1000kbps in throughput) frown

Would consider them again if I move and LLU is an option, based on the strength of the support I got.

Thanks all!

Alex

Entanet (shock horror) best thing I did was move away from them.
would suggest looking at Newnet, AAISP, to see if any of their packages
would be suitable for you..

edit removed IDNET

Too true.
Migrated from Entanet 3 months ago, should have done it 4 months earlier. Lack of bandwidth, change of policies and packeting.
Alex that was probably was your best move to go with ADSL24, if it doesnt work out, its an easy change to their new network provider next month.
