Whats my ISP going to Be?

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I had 512kb through IDnet two years ago but have been using a T-Mobile dongle for the last year as I have been moving around the place. Now I find myself settled I have had a phone line installed.

Its on a non-LLU exchange as far as I know and should be capable of 3mb according to the engineer.

I don't mind a 12 month contract and I'd like a download limit of no less than 10gb, (with the option to increase it), and no traffic-shaping at peak times or for torrents.

The two ISPs that jump out at me are O2 which I have no experience of, (I have also been considering getting a mobile contract with them) and going back to IDnet...

I appreciate your thoughts - thanks!

O2 non-LLU is meant to be a bit hit and miss.

NewNet have (I think) as good a reputation as IDNet and may be better value for money at the 10GB mark.

If you check out your exchange at SamKnows.com that will confirm the LLU availability. Bare in mind that the LLU owner listed by Sam may not reflect who you can get a connection from.

Eg. Bulldog LLU were the old bulldog (reasonably good), bought by Cable & Wireless (ok). The retail customers were quickly sold down the river to Tiscali (bad) and moved off the Bulldog/C&W kit (very bad). Recently C&W started wholesaling the capacity through several resellers (good).

So tell us what Sam says.

Thanks for the guidance guys,

I've looked up my exchange which is SSCHN.

Its LLU unbundled with O2/Be and Talktalk/CPW, (who didn't make my list).

So I guess I'll have a look at the O2 LLU packages, thanks again.

Make sure you have a read of MKD's costing page.

At the moment the first year on Premium is cheaper than on Standard due to the higher cashback and 3 free months.

Oh damn - I should have checked for responses on here before I ordered it - thanks anyway!

I went for the standard option in the end.

Ounds like you did at least go through a cashback site? And standard is still dirt cheap.

It will connect at full line speed for the first couple of days, which can be interesting.

Hi

Great to see someone as knowledgable as yourself creating a Broadband website
to help the novice such as myself and have the availability to access at all times.
Thanks

Thanks sidneyk.

There's a lot I have to add (slowly!) in the Troubleshooting section now I have the basics up and running. There are more technical sites that go into the intricacies in depth, but can be daunting. My aim is exactly what you say, for non-geeks and explaining what things mean in practice.

Plus of course my own opinions and experiences which those sites don't normally offer.
