I haven't been with o2 as a mobile customer for about 6months, just logged into my account and email is still running fine.

Thanks (and I'm glad to hear you haven't been ordering munitions off eBay!).

Do you happen to know what happens if you give up phone and broadband? Can you maintain it as a paid for O2 address/web-space?
Nothing happens! Email a/c remains if you give up BB. Phone goes hand-in-hand with BB. There is no web-space involved other than your mailbox on O2's server. As I said earlier it is entirely free and independent of BB; as long as you can supply any mobile # you can have an O2 mailbox for free.

How strange! How did you discover it?

That's a deep marketing game though don't you think? Though not just out of the box, or outside the envelope, more like monkeys typing Shakespeare.

Cost to O2, unnoticeable, gain through getting a possible customer (monkey?) (mobile or broadband) to look further, maybe three a year?

I don't find it so! After all many ISPs auto keep your mailboxes after you leave and many allow you to sign up for free PAYG dial-up just to get a mailbox.

When you apply for BB it asks you to 1st register your personal details incl. username, mobile # and mailbox. As I already had this for years I logged into my existing one and it allowed me to apply from there. When I left, I did not expect it to steal back my long-standing registration and it didn't.

EDIT: I cannot possibly comment on hypothetical Cost Benefit Analyses! wink

Ah yes, memory kicks in again. Not so simple as a non-customer in any respect getting a free O2 email account! tongue

Replace "simple" by "obvious" and I'd agree with you for the case of a non-mobile or non-BB customer. Nevertheless the feature is there for all.

Agreed, I registered with O2 initially because I had an O2 mobile, but it wasn't essential to have one.

I do have a gmail account but it is only a transit stop as I empty the in/span/bin boxes every day. I don't want my e-mails readable/searchable by a third party (and all the various Governments/agencies throughout the world which Google is obliged to obey).
What makes you think Google hasn't archived and indexed your mail before it's deleted?
