Fresher just moved to London- help!

[link to this post]

Hi I just moved to London(WC1E) for Uni, and am very confused with all the tech terms.

I used to have 100Mbps cable line back in Boston, and was happy with it. Unfortunately I found out that most of UK internet services don't offer that speed- but I would love to get something close to what I used to get. I'm studying marketing and am constantly uploading/downloading promotional videos, pdfs, etc. I also need to get a blackberry and was thinking of getting it from Vodafone. Is there anything that comes as a package or something? I was never good with machines and I never will be, so I would appreciate if you could recommend me something that either has great customer service, or doesn't break down with problems. And is it true that vodafone has best reception?

I'm clueless in this new city, please help!!!

Virgin Media cable do 50M cable, where available (about half of houses in the UK primarily in cities and towns). See http://www.virginmedia.com/

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_availabi... has a general availability tool mainly based on landline phone numbers.

We have 5 competing mobile networks in the UK, 2 of which are merging. O2 and Vodafone use mainly 900 MHz GSM and hence have better coverage in rural areas. T-mobile/Orange (soon to merge) use 1800 MHz GSM with shorter range hence more base stations which can have more capacity in cities. Three is an entirely 3G network (2100 MHz) that falls back to Orange 2G if there is no 3G coverage. They all have signal strength predictors on their websites.

Get with the program and buy and android smartphone instead of a blackberry smile

MaxDSL - goes as fast as it can and doesn't read the line checker first.
