Moving from Sky connect. Need some advice please?

Totally feed up of next to no speed on Sky connect so looking to move. At the moment I can only get upto 8MB on my line and my distance from the exchange means I get around 3MB.

I only have 1 LLU on the exchange which is Talktalk. After reading about them I don't want to move to them. As this is my first post I was looking for any help and advice in transferring to a new ISP and ideally someone who doesn't throttle like sky connect. At times I am getting 110kbps which is a joke for £17 a month.

How much downloading do you do? There are several good ISPs around £17/£18 but low allowance at those prices.

Do you mean 110kb(its)ps or 110kB(ytes)ps? A byte is 8 bits, so a huge difference.

Its bits! At times I struggle to load a website and you can forget about Youtube, iPlayer etc

I do a little P2P but nothing huge. The odd TV episode a week and bits from iTunes

Careful when navigating the IDNet site as there is a similar page for ADSL2+ which you can't get.
Newnet count upload and the free overnight period is unreliable - sometimes gets counted and you have to argue the toss. Otherwise very good.

Many ISPs including these are moving over to 21CN solutions and the BT systems cause trouble for some people. You have to hope you aren't an unlucky one.

Thanks very much for the links. The idnet option seems decent value for money and no traffic policy which is basically what I am after.

So what problems could I face with the 21CN?

I'm not sure it will affect you, so don't worry too much, as it is the same for all ISPs that you can get.

There are two ways you can get ADSL Max which is all you can get. The old way using BT Centrals rented by the ISP, and the new way using something calle IPSC (IPStream Connect).

IPSC is a sort of half-way house so ISPs can get your 20CN connection into them through their 21CN links.

I think it is only the full 21CN ADSL2+ products that get the occasional problem, though I can't be sure.

Of the three I recommended I know Newnet use IPSC for the old ADSL Max. I expect the other two also do, but haven't seen any confirmation.

The main trouble seems to be the BT Noise Margin management goes crazy so people get very slow connections. No ISP seems to be able to sort it out quickly when it happens, but it only seems to happen to a few customers, and I think the ones I have seen have all been full 21CN ADSL2+.

In a way perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned it. Just wanted to prepare you if anything odd happened though.

What is certain is that with all of the three I gave you they don't throttle or traffic manage, and no significant congestion. So 99% certain to be far better than Sky Connect. Also they are all monthly contract.

I don't think any of the 3 will be half as bad as Sky connect. I might opt for the idnet and keep an eye on my exchange to see if we ever get 21CN ADSL2+

Just need to check the 2 routers I have to see if they will work.

Any router you have that is working now should work on IDNet. Unless it is locked to a provider.

You just need to change the login details to what IDNet tell you.

I've got 2 Sky routers. A sagem and Netgear which I think are locked to sky. I also have a Netgear Gt router which was supplied by Virgin which works on my Sky connection so I am hoping this one will work on idnet.

You might find the Netgear versions numbers are not the latest as that is a while ago.

Quite a few people unlock the Netgears for use on O2 and Be.
