Avoiding hefty connection charges

Hi,

I'm moving house soon and looking to change broadband providers at the new place. Currently with Virgin but I feel I'm paying over the odds for a quality of service I could find cheaper elsewhere.

The new place is at the exchange: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/LNCED. It has a Virgin line and no BT line (although I know it has had one previously) and thus I'd incur a reconnection fee (127 quid or whatever it is) plus a stupid 12 month phone contract I don't want. My main question is can I get the Post Office's one month phone contract, cancel after 1 month and then leave my line without a phone contract and just get a broadband connection?

If this is not possible, which ISP's are offering a phone/broadband package in order to avoid BT? I phoned BE (my desired provider) and they say they may have this available next week, however they didn't sound certain of this and I wouldn't want to wait a long time for their services. Any other decent ISP's (LLU, 'unlimited') offering a package like this?

No, you cannot have a line with no line rental.

To achieve what you are wanting, then yes take the Post Office line which you can cancel at sort notice.

You can have Be broadband on that.

Then if Be come up with a bundle you fancy you can easily switch.

I think it is worth considering a line installed by BT on an 18-month contract for £29.99!. After which you could switch it to wherever you like.

Alternative ISPs doing both are Sky and TalkTalk.

For Sky you no longer need to have Sky TV, they just add £2.50pm. Though if Be is your preference I don't expect TT figures in your short-list.

Just had a read of Sky's usage policies (http://www.sky.com/shop/terms-conditions/broadband/usage-policies/). It states at the end of it's network management policy that this policy does not apply to Sky broadband unlimited. Does this mean the unlimited package has no fair usage/traffic management policies? It does sound like a decent service from what I've read elsewhere. Bit of a bargain as well.

There used to be an FUP on the unlimited package but it was removed September 2008. See here. The other details have changed since then of course.

You can always take it with you, even if you change phone #s.
