WBC FTTC by 1st July 2011 - what does this mean to me?

Looking for new ISP so I checked BT availability checker. It says I should typically get 5.5Mbps (no surprise, that's what I get now). It also says:

Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 1st July 2011. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 32.9Mbps and upstream line speed of 8.2Mbps.

Would I need BT broadband to get FTTC, or do other ISPs get a look-in? Should I hold off changing now so I can change in 6 months? How much does this cost?

Lots of other ISPs have a FTTC offering, AAISP, ADSL24 e.t.c.

BT Broadband's infinity is also an option.

That date is highly likely to change, probably to later. In December a huge number scheduled for 31 Dec 2010 went back to March or even June 2011. See a few threads in the Fibre forum.

Mine even has an FTTC cabinet happily humming away to itself. The BTW post code and address checkers say I could get over 28Mbps but the BTW phone number one doesn't mention FTTC and the Infinity checker says it isn't sceduled to be rolled out in this area.

Go figure.

Re other ISPs, see this list, though all are more expensive than Infinity.
