New ISP ?!

[link to this post]

Ok

So i'm sick to death of the stupid IP profiling system

Now i'm looking for a new ISP i have requested my MAC just waiting for that to come through

My Exchange

I want..

Unlimited downloads, Fastpath, No throttling of services, Price is not much of an issue £35 p/m with phoneline would be fine.

I can only see BE as a viable choice unless someone else can suggest something else?

Router Stats - ADSL Link Downstream/Upstream
Connection Speed 14878/1051 kbps
Line Attenuation 25.5/15.1 db
Noise Margin 6.4/7.7 db

Also my exchange is getting fibre 2012 jan if that makes much difference thanks.

Looks like a good choice. Don't forget to check TopCashBack and Quidco for cash back.

The next best I would suggest is Sky. You don't have to have Sky TV anymore.

BE has a good reputation, so not likely to go far wrong with them.

I'm (presently) with UKFSN and they seem fine to me.
Can't say I've had any problems, at least. No doubt someone will tell you they have, but it'll be much the same with just about any ISP, some have problems, most people don't.

Unlimited D/L on C&W / Bulldog LLU which you have at your exchange

Fibre will only make a difference if you really need the extra connection speed. If you don't actually require extra bandwidth, there's not much reason to change - unless the copper is getting troublesome in your area.

Even on fibre, some ISPs still have limits & throttling and of course, the date for fibre may yet change, too.

Yes i was considering sky which i may just pick though i don't like how you are locked down to there router ect

C&W are fine but they just don't offer fast profiles i think there standard one is 9db (my line can easily do 3db) and no fastpath also UKFSN want £40 for migration which i think is moot since i'll be coming from a BT based landline.

Now fibre well...my exchange will probably get enabled in jan but no doubt the cabs won't be ready till well later on.

Given that Jan is 6 months away, and that date is bound to be very speculative, I don't think you need to worry about the Be 12-month contract. They have a 3-month option anyway, at least for the broadband.

I would tend to leave the phone with BT, as if you leave Be braodband you have to move the phone away as well.

I think Plusnet will let you keep the phone with them if you migrate away, if that would suit you, although you cannot sign up to Plusnet phone in the first place without signing up for or already being a Plusnet broadband customer.

A Plusnet line counts as BT for Be purposes.

I suggest you PM bpullen and ask. If you can't, then yes, ring BT and say you want to do a "Return to Donor" on your phone, keeping the same number. Once that is done you get your MAC from Plusnet and order Be (via a cashback site).

What you need to avoid is a 12-month Be phone contract if you find you can get FTTC, in case Be still don't provide that by then.

Yes, it would generate a cease. It takes between 4-10 working days.

As the phone line is a WLR then you would not do a RTD you would just place an order to move your phone line, thats all, no down time at all.

As vivaciti says smile. I was tired last night and Return to Donor is not the right request in this case, that is for when the phone is on LLU. I realised after I had shut the computer down and was getting ready for bed. Though even RTD from LLU doesn't cause a cease of broadband, unless perhaps it was from TalkTalk. Several have done it from Sky LLU.

(Unfortunately BT errors and mistakes can always occur, with any change to anything frown).

Be careful that you ask BT to take over the the rental of the existing phone line though. Don't accidentally order a second line.

You could even ask vivaciti to take over the line rental, as they would allow Be broadband on it and your choice of FTTC ISP when it becomes available to you.

Leaving the phone with Plusnet doesn't appeal? That is the simplest of all if they allow it, as I suggested before.

Throughput on Be is normally 83-84% of sync. (As soon as that sync is achieved). The missing amount is unavoidable TCP/IP and ATM overheads. These are to some extent why the BT IP Profile is so much lower than the sync, as the ATM overheads (I think) are catered for within that.

IP Profiles of course only work at that level at the bottom of a band. If your sync is near the top of a band the penalty is far greater. They also have the delay in rising and aggressive noise management that Be doesn't.

I'm completely lost now. I made a mistake in my terminology to the OP, as already posted, but what order you are talking about I have no idea. If it is an LLU phone line of your own you are talking about, which is what RTD is about, then it seems to depend on who you are leaving.

I have seen people leave Sky MPF for SMPF with no trouble, then migrate away from the Sky LLU. I don't think that can be done with a TalkTalk-based MPF service.

As for believing what BT phone support say .... I'm sure you know better than to accept everything without question tongue.

That sync speed is a bit low for 24db atten. You should be syncing anywhere between 18-20 meg, try a different router and if necessary plug it into you master test socket to check if your extensions (if any) are causing problems.

I think its actually a line problem

i've never synced higher than around 15600 @ 6db no matter what router i tried

DG384GT,DG384Gv3,585v7 & 585v8 i've tried when i was with other ISPs

and yes i'm in the test socket

but when i'm in the extension its only like 70kbps lower downstream.

i'm using the BE BOX currently.

EDIT tried "gaming mode"

now synced at

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,317 / 16,508

EDIT again

now synced at

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,412 / 18,334

Damn i'm impressed. !!
