Can I get a faster line speed if I change my ISP ?

I am currently using The Post Office as my ISP and they say they provide download speeds up to 8 Mgb. My current line speed is only +- 1.5 Mgb and I would like to know if I change to another ISP will it be possible that I will receive faster download speeds ? The same phone line will be used through the same local exchange, so my thoughts are that the speed will not change no matter which ISP I use ........ or am I wrong. ?? Do the servers that the various ISP use provide the difference in speeds ?
Please help me understand how it all works. I don't want to change ISP's if my speeds won't improve.

Your connection speed will not change if moving supplier if you are staying on the same technology (ADSL Max - ADSL Max) but could if you moved from ADSL Max - ADSL2+
The first starting point would be to post back your full line stats as reported by your router as you may have a wiring issue that could improve your speed.
Some ISPs may not have the techie knowledge to spot this whereas some may, but regardless of the ISP there are people on this forum that could help if it looks like you have some line issues and point you in the correct direction to improve them.

Are you saying you only get 1.5Mb on that? Please can you be more specific about the speeds you are seeing and some results of speedtests / downloads (such as the downloads available from the speed test link on the main part of this site?

You should be getting over 6Mb from your connection in real speed.

As of 31st May you would get higher speeds on ADSL2+ via a BT reseller. Or you could go with Sky or a TalkTalk reseller now to get higher speeds. Your stats seem to be missing the attenuation and if you can get that from your router that would give more of an indication but your noise margin suggest your line could go a fair bit faster on the ADSL2+ technologies.

PS - You also could go Virgin Cable and get 120Mb/s headline connection speeds by the looks of it if you wanted (and assuming you have the cable to you which isn't certain from Samknows).

I wouldn't post your MAC & IP Addys in future or anything that can identify you. Too late now on this post.

Need your Attenuations from your router. However even now you should be getting at least 6 Meg throughput.

OK something wrong there, looking at the snr that is holding the speed down a bit, but we really need the attenuation to be accurate.
Are you saying that on your connection you only get a throughput of around 1.5meg?
Run a the BT performance check and past back the results to see if your profile is out.

Fair enough. Samknows just said it may be available but obviously couldn't confirm without more info.

I have run speedtester and get a reading of 1.67 Mbps. See results below:
