I am currently using The Post Office as my ISP and they say they provide download speeds up to 8 Mgb. My current line speed is only +- 1.5 Mgb and I would like to know if I change to another ISP will it be possible that I will receive faster download speeds ? The same phone line will be used through the same local exchange, so my thoughts are that the speed will not change no matter which ISP I use ........ or am I wrong. ?? Do the servers that the various ISP use provide the difference in speeds ?
Please help me understand how it all works. I don't want to change ISP's if my speeds won't improve.
Thank you

Hi,
Your connection speed will not change if moving supplier if you are staying on the same technology (ADSL Max - ADSL Max) but could if you moved from ADSL Max - ADSL2+
The first starting point would be to post back your full line stats as reported by your router as you may have a wiring issue that could improve your speed.
Some ISPs may not have the techie knowledge to spot this whereas some may, but regardless of the ISP there are people on this forum that could help if it looks like you have some line issues and point you in the correct direction to improve them.

Are you saying you only get 1.5Mb on that? Please can you be more specific about the speeds you are seeing and some results of speedtests / downloads (such as the downloads available from the speed test link on the main part of this site?
You should be getting over 6Mb from your connection in real speed.
As of 31st May you would get higher speeds on ADSL2+ via a BT reseller. Or you could go with Sky or a TalkTalk reseller now to get higher speeds. Your stats seem to be missing the attenuation and if you can get that from your router that would give more of an indication but your noise margin suggest your line could go a fair bit faster on the ADSL2+ technologies.
PS - You also could go Virgin Cable and get 120Mb/s headline connection speeds by the looks of it if you wanted (and assuming you have the cable to you which isn't certain from Samknows).

I wouldn't post your MAC & IP Addys in future or anything that can identify you. Too late now on this post.
Need your Attenuations from your router. However even now you should be getting at least 6 Meg throughput.
1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU => 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU => 2011: Orange 19 Meg WBC

OK something wrong there, looking at the snr that is holding the speed down a bit, but we really need the attenuation to be accurate.
Are you saying that on your connection you only get a throughput of around 1.5meg?
Run a the BT performance check and past back the results to see if your profile is out.
www.speedtester.bt.com
On ADSL2+ you would see an increase in speed, but we really need your attenuation.

Tidied that bit up, i.e. an unusual edit rather than post delete

On VM cable, our maps indicate probably not available. Cable in some postcodes, but not this persons.

Fair enough. Samknows just said it may be available but obviously couldn't confirm without more info.

I have run speedtester and get a reading of 1.67 Mbps. See results below:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 1.67 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600 Kbps-7.15 Mbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :7.55 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 6.5 Mbps
When I used the Katz link to download my modem line data I was not given attenuation data. How can I get these readings ?

Some modems hide them better than others.
Which modem do you have?
Based on the speedtester result, which shows a decent IP profile, then switching to a better provider might help now, or if you don't mind going LLU then Sky or TalkTalk can go even faster.
We can't be sure that switching provider will help, as it may be congestion affecting a number of providers at the exchange, PostOffice is normally ok though. Can you do another test at a quieter time of day e.g. before 9am. Tests now can be affected by school half term

I have a ZyXEL P-660HW-T1 v2 modem.
I have run a speed test on a few occasions at different time and most readings are in the region of 1.5 to 2 Mb.
I am worried that there is something else causing the slowness of the line, hence my reluctance at this point to change my ISP. I don't want to change and then find I still have the problem. The speeds were much faster when I first changed to The Post Office + 2 years ago.
Is the any other way of checking my attenuation data ?

Are you connecting wired or wireless to your router, and what version of Windows are you using? That's if it is WIndows you have.

I usually operate on wireless, but for the purpose of checking speeds, etc., I am connected by wire. I am using Windows 7 operating system.

If the problem is the PC, which looks unlikely, then moving wont make it worse.
If its not the PC or modem they very likely to get better. Alas this is one of those you cannot be sure until you try it situations. Indications are that something is holding you back, and its a case of changing the elements until you find what it is.
You can do things like take PC to a friends and if fast there, then probably not that.

I have 2 laptops running off the same router (wireless) and both have slow speeds, so I doubt it is the PC.
I am currently fitting a spare microfilter to see if that makes any difference.
Also, I have a spare router, so might also try that.
If all fails, I will try a new ISP. Who would you recommend, Sky or Talk Talk ? Neither have great reviews, but it appears that people only submit reviews if they are unhappy with a service.
Thanks for your help so far.....

Sky LLU generally good, and TalkTalk service is generally good, just let down by poor phone support if you need it.

I've not used a Zyxel for some time, but from memory - at least on a 661 which should be much the same - if you look down the LHS to 'maintenance' and click it should show you some more options one of which will be 'DSL Line'. If you look at this it will show you a window full of figures amongst which will be upstream/downstream SNR and the attn.
I could be hopelessly wrong on this, but maybe there are some current Zyxel users out there who could chip in.

Something very amiss there, could it be that your ISP is capping things their end ?
Also, is the link between the router wired, or wireless ?

It appears that I have solved my line speed problem.........
I found that my Sky TV Box telephone line did not have a microfilter connected in the line, so I disconnected the line and ran a speed test and it has increased to 5.42 Mbg.
Before I disconnected the Sky line I had a 1.67 reading on BT Speedtester.
Thanks to everyone who offered support in trying to solve my problem. I hope it is now solved
