New House. Is the waiting list really 6 weeks

We are moving house & we have just been told the engineer can't be around until the 23rd January 2013 & then it will be a day or so after that before the broadband is on. They say all the providers are having the same problem due to the extreme weather. Is that so?

At present yes.

Weather backlogs, and add to this Christmas break.

We moved in to a brand-new house in 1968, complete with a connected Master Socket of the period, wired right back to the exchange, as was all the other houses on the estate.

We were the first residents; and the estate took about 6 years to fill, 77 houses, about 1300 metres duct-length from the exchange.

We did not achieve a working phone until 1972, although "essential worker" etc, purely incidental to the old Strowger system being replaced by the then new cross-bar type.


The old master socket was the variety with a half-inch square hole in the middle, with the contacts being one on each side of the square. Very crude and clumsy compared with today's BTO Master Sockets and incomparable with mobile phone connectors etc.

What's it got to do with the OP's post regarding waiting times for connection of services ?

Contrast the-

8 weeks approx from today, 29th November 2012 to 23rd January 2013

with

208 weeks from 1968 to 1972,

where in both cases, a simple "connection of services" (jumpers and risers) at the exchange is required.

Yes, thats about correct, we are seeing these sort of waiting times, although some areas are fairly quick, just a case of local resources.
