Time for a change?

[link to this post]

Hi,

I have been with BE for 11 months, I am on their Value package with unlimited calls etc so it is costing me around £38 a month.

I was looking at Sky as the equivalent package is only £22 a month. I was wondering on peoples experiences, I mainly game online iRacing and LoTRO.

My line stats:

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1.308 / 12.081

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12,0 / 19,3

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 8,7 / 36,0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6,1 / 5,8

Any thoughts would be great!

Cheers!!

Might as well go for it.

Sky LLU is brilliant. You might loose a tiny bit of speed as SKY go for stability over speed. The bonus is that Sky broadband connections do not drop out or disconnect (generally). I could go literally months and months without a single drop out.

Sky's DLM runs for the 1st 10 days and literally aims to get you a broadband connection that will never ever drop. That's its number 1 aim. It starts slow usually at 4Mbps and works it way up - ensuring at each increase in speed that your line is 100% stable.

You should have no problems on Sky for what you need.

Signed up with Sky for 12 months last week. Activation is on the 18th December. House re-cabled with extensions removed to hopefully get the full benefit from broadband with no speed cap(Currently on BE value).

Did the re-cabling improve your line stats?

Slight increase in downstream, but I am limited to 12mb anyway. Seem to be getting far fewer FEC/CRC/HEC errors. Also removed intermittent crackle on the line.

Now waiting to see if the iPlate helps any further.

If you have no extensions an iPlate does nothing to help, and looks ugly. Occasionally it can degrade a connection.

Re connection speed, at most another 1.3Mbps. Almost certainly less than that.

Connection - Plusnet Extra Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 53.7/14.9Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

Yeah it is more for reducing stuff hanging out the wall tbh

I have a Solwise faceplate that looks okay on the BT NTE5 master socket. Has connection for your ADSL and a phone. Yes its worth it just to keep it all neat rather than having micro filters hanging around.

tongue smile

You don't mean an iPlate then! (Component 2 in the pic). That just adds bulk but you still need a dangly filter with it.

You mean a filtered faceplate, good ones available from ADSL Nation, Solwise and Clarity, - a different beastie altogether.

Good luck. I was able to get reasonable speeds, the same as my old provider using SKY, so expect you will too.

Once FTTC comes to you, the next choice is to spend the same money again (saving) to have even greater speed.

I am now paying the same for phone/bb that I paid when I had adsl 512K 10 years ago but now have unlimited calls and 40M down/10 up.. go figure.

I was thinking this today smile The great ting (from what I can see) is that Sky Fibre is unlimited, most of the other ISP are putting a usage cap on, so I will upgrade if it is worth it. Not sure what speed I will get on my line until March/April...
