Leaving Virgin (or not?) for better up speeds!

Hello guys I am back with yet another house move.
Finally I can move to an area that is covered by FTTC and not only Virgin.
I have in fact had to go with Virgin for 3 years because they were the only fibre providers, but now I have full access!
Unfortunately Hyperoptic is not available otherwise I would definitely get that.
So I am looking to move provider, not that I was unhappy with Virgin, but they have terrible upload speeds.

I phoned them to cancel and they offered the following:
350mb and 20mb upload speeds for £37 a month 12 month contract with £50 one off credit.

I am wondering what is the best choice for me... is this a good deal? 20mb upload speed seems good, but I have been with Sky before and they had quite good upload speeds as well.

I usually stream from home that's why I need the up speeds!

Your upload speeds for Sky and other VDSL2 services will depend on the distance from the VDSL2 green cabinet, so it might be 20 Mbps or it might be a lot lower.

What speeds are providers saying you get when you make an order enquiry, that will give a good idea of the VDSL2 (FTTC) upload speeds

<£33 for 350mb/20mb sounds like a good deal to me. I suppose it just depends on how congested the area is.

Christ I pay £52 a month - you got a good deal there - and they are about to do 500/35 we believe (we being the people who get fed bits of info)

and FTTC is the same upload speed - you know this right?

I jumped in July 2017. Had been with Virgin from the days of Bradford Cable, 20+ years.

I also stream from home and upload speed is very important. I was on VM's 100meg service, so only 6meg up speed. I looked around, saw I could get 'up to 20meg' if I went FTTC.

VM offered me a similar deal to stay, they would give me the 350meg service, with 20 up, for a similar price - but only for 12 months, then it would leap up to whatever the full rate is.

So I said no, and went with EE, as I was already a mobile customer and would get a useful 5GB mobile data boost for taking their home broadband.

I have been getting around 56-60 down and 8-9 up since I joined them. Yes, I'm on the 80/20 product but the upload speed has always been lower than IO really wanted - but better than VM were giving me.

Last year I was visited by the local VM bod, told me a pack of lies about speed now being 200/30 standard. Offered me a package deal, but again only for one year. Of course, the speeds he mentioned were totally untrue. He also claimed they would fit fibre to the house, I've yet to stop laughing about that one !

Check a few sites, see what they reckon you can actually get before making any decision. You may find you can get almost the full 80/20, or you could be further from the cabinet and only get 28/5 at the most. (using a check on my mother-in-law's place for those figures)

I am with VM and I get 377.73Mb/sec down & 21.07Mb/sec up. There no one out there that could supply me with similar or better speed at this precise moment. I do keep on checking nothing that wouldn't require me to firk out money I can't afford.

Eh since when did something become 30 just because it was over 25 lol ? Explain please, and could i see a speedtest result showing 25Mbps upload . Cheers

someoe elsewhere reckons they are over provisioned to 36 up.. maye this is the trial for 500/35 they are on about?

I can put my mobile and my 4G home broadband connection together using Speedify and get over 70mbps upload - which is handy.

I'm not sure how to find this out, they give the maximum speeds advertised when I put their "products" in my basket.

Is there a way to find out the distance from the property to the cabinet?

Fibre To The Premises - basically they put REAL 100% fibre to your house - and you might be able to get much higher speeds.

You need to go to places like https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/ and places like zen internet or AAISP and they will tell you the speeds you could get

It would be best if you upload a screenshot of the table, and the line above it with the address removed . Then we can explain anything that is unclear.

For me personally, I use Plex and I am with Virgin.

The answer really depends on how Virgin is in your area. You�ve said you�re already with them but do you receive the speed you�re promised all of the time?

I have to be with Virgin as BT are unreliable in my area. I was hesitant to go with Virgin initially as I had been with them at uni and the peak time service was awful.

They recently cabled my area with their FTTH and it�s been superb. Minus the issues with their Hub 3 in terms of latency I�ve been getting the full speed (which for me is 388 meg). They say you�ll get 20 meg up but I get 23.

It�s excellent. Serves the whole family (some of which live abroad) and it�s great!

Just waiting them for them to bring out gigabit!

Sounds like a good deal and I�ll definitely be negotiating my price down based on your comments here!

That is an exchange wide definition and means at least 1 property can get each of those thing, hence why people are pointing you at address checkers so you can get some information on the specific property.

If I mananage to get something above 25 then I will post but that is a rareity....but I have seen my connection acheive high upload speeds which is the main reason for sticking with VM until something faster comes along.....

We are not talking about Leased Lines, Virgin don't do a minimum line speed guarantee unless that's changed?

No line speed guarantee with Virgin Media because the service uses fixed line speeds.

Suspect you meant Virgin does not guarantee throughput on its consumer services, and if you had been that clear initially I would not have said anything.

4. In the postcode field type the postcode of the property
5. Press the Submit button
6. Select the address from the list you are shown

As I said before the table you linked to is of no use unless you enjoy 1 in 10,000 type gambles

So you should get good speeds from VDSL2

Ignore the G.fast the estimate is so low unlikely to be allowed to order

Hmm my understanding from this table is that I won't get downloads greater than 80mbs, but will get upload speeds of 20~17.

But what is VDLS2 (VDSL Range B?) who provides it? It doesn't seem that it would be of any advantage staying with virgin... is that correct?

Also what is Downstream handback threshold?

Those estimates are the connection speeds, not the throughput. The throughput, particularly down, can depend on the ISP you choose.

VDSL2 is the technical name for what you get with FTTC. (Fibre To The Cabinet). It is optical fibre from the exchange to a cabinet near you, then normal copper telephone line from there to the house.

No I meant on any service outside of LL's they do a fix SLA but not throughput

The BT G.fast £20 back if speed falls below 100 Mbps is what?

The A and B ranges are the same product (VDSL2) but give you a worst case and best case scenario for the connection speed to expect.

Thanks for this, so I think Sky is not bad as it costs 27 a month... save 120 pounds a year.
Too bad G.Fast doesn't work there.
