FTTP - simple question

Apologies if this has been covered somewhere else.

I’m currently with BT FTTP 150mb download through openreach network.

Is there any reason that if I switch to FTTP with sky, talk talk or plus net on their 150mb / 145mb service that the service in terms of speed and page load times etc will not be any different? Are open reach just reselling the line to other providers in this instances or do other providers have access to play about with the settings ie reduce your speeds at peak times etc or share your bandwidth between other customers etc

You should not in theory notice any difference. the time you may notice the difference is if the provider can't cope with the amount of customers they have.
FTTP is a shared service anyway, but who you are with will not make any difference from what I have learnt. Are you thinking of switching because of price?
Openreach is more or less doing with FTTP as they do with FTTC as far as wholesale goes, I think Openreach is a 32:1 ratio split, so you are sharing with 32 people. That is, if I have that right.

You may see some difference in peak throughout and ping (could be better/worse/same) as sky and talk talk have their own backhaul network from the handover points where the FTTP network terminates. Any differences are likely to be small however

The Openreach connection between a headend exchange and customer premises is the same regardless of the ISP. It is a shared service, the underlying FTTP GPON network is 2.5Gbps down / 1.25Gbps up shared by upto 32 customers and the guaranteed rates for all the bandwith profiles are published.

The link between headend exchanges via the ISPs own or bought-in backhaul and datacentre(s) to the internet is usually unknown as it is commercially confidential information - if you can cram more users into a given amount of backhaul capacity with the hope that not all of them use lots of bandwidth at the same time you make more profit.

Sounds like a bit of lottery when it leaves openreach then. My thoughts are that the big companies will all be trying to maximise profit …. So BT who I’m with currently would should be no better or worse than the others ???

Ha, ha, I was right, with the 32:1 ratio. It is less with Zzoomm so i have heard, 1:16.

It is a fair bit of money £44 a month, I don't blame you for changing providers, unless BT can do you a good deal. One of the reasons I changed to Zzoomm was because of price.
I was with Plusnet for 9 years, ok it was FTTC, but I was happy with the service most of the time, if you don't need a home phone then look at them. My main problem with providers at the moment is the 24 month contracts most are chucking people onto. also don't forget the price rises, CPI+3.9% that you will get twice in a 24-month contract. If inflation stays as it is or go lower, then it will be slightly better.

Do you really need that speed? If you want to save money then maybe go for something a bit lower, not that it is a great saving, Plusnet 74Mb.s is £26.99, so only a £3 saving, but £3 is £3 if you don't need the speed.
I will reduce my package from 500Mb/s to 150Mb/s when my contract is over, unless Zzoomm gives me another deal. No lower speed sadly.

As been said you should not notice any difference what other provider you go with as long as they don't get congested at peak times and even BT can suffer with that.

I think it is normally 30:1 with 2 unused/spares for Openreach PON
