DLL username log-on missing, help plz

My wife's XP tower pc will no longer complete the boot. After the brief splashscreen to say Windows is loading it reports the DLL for the userlogname is missing. It asks me to insert the "diskette" whatever that is.

I have tried our emg boot floppy, her XP CD-ROM and even the recent

Plz keep things simple. Age 77 displaying bad ping rate between brain cells

Have you setup the CD to boot before the hard drive?
If not, set the CD boot first in the bios and you should be able to boot from your XP CD

brouce write down the missing .dll

then do a search for it on your computer, then bung the missing .dll onto a floppy and march over to your wife's comp and duely instert the floppy once xp has asked you for the diskette

Missing system tool?

Before implementing good advice this thread on my wife's pc, thought I would check out on my pc first.

Am told that Start>Progs>Accessories>System Tools>System Info will route me into a tab called " tools" which will enable me to check missing or corrupt contents in the dynamic link library. Another route to same is Run>MSINFO32.exe

Been there, done both. Fact is that the system-tools tab seems to be missing the essential option? What am I doing wrong? Bruce +++

Bruce, make sure you have your XP CD handy, then go to the run dialog and type in sfc /scannow

This will replace any missing/damaged/modified files with the orignal files.

Ah just saw that you can't even get to the desktop, you should be able to run system file checker from the windows recovery console, which can be accessed via the XP CD when you boot from it.
