New Socket A

Good morning, I'm in the process of building a budget PC for a good friend and I'd like to stick to Socket A as I have a fair amount of good bits here which I can interchange to keep the cost down - eBuyer are selling socket A boards but not the processors that I can see.

What's the best place to get new Socket A processors from these days and what's the highest spec?

I havent seen anyone selling "new" socket A processors for quite some time. There are probably some about in the same way that you can buy new P233MMX's from specialist suppliers but be prepared to pay big bucks as they are made on very small production runs so with no economies of scale

On the other hand if you're prepared to spend a little you could get a tidy little system

I think as you say Rich, a 775 mobo seems to be the way forward - I certainly look at your spec and give it some thought.

That'd be the way i'd go with it plus everything is under warranty then too.

Not worth going back to socket A, give it a few more months and the boards will be difficult to get, so if the board you buy have a fault, you will be stuck.


I know it is annoying that the goal posts are moved so often, but that is progression, well that is what they tell us.

You can get some pretty cheap AMD AM2 boards around and Semprons to go on them, it depends how powerful you want the moachine and what you want from it.

You could go for a 939 board, I think they still uses DDR1 memory.


If you really want to stay with socket A, then you could try Ebay, not that I recommend it mind you.

But it is Intel, poor lad, fancy trying to make him go for an Intel

Whatever, ffs it was an example nothing more nothing less to show what you could do with little money as for 754/939 whats the point in suggesting that old stuff that wont be around much longer either when the new stuff is the same price and the cost of DDR2 RAM in nothing anyway

Maybe I should have a put a :-) at the end. The OP said he had some old stuff that he wanted to reuse, well he may have had some DDR memory and the cost of decent DDR2 memory is still pretty high, ok you can get the cheap stuff, but I have learnt with this computer that cheap memory is not the best way to go for a higher spec machine. I got away with it on my old 2.2 socket A machine, but not on this dual core thing.

You are right, I am not going to say you are wrong, it is better to buy hardware that will be supported for at least 12 months. computer hardware is moving so fast now that you buy something today and it is almost out of date by next week.

I am sorry if you took it the wrong way, it was not intended to be taken that way. I am not a fan of Intel, never have been and I doubt I ever will be, even if my laptop is Intel based, but then Intel is better on Lapops chipset and processor than AMD.

As has been said there are some on eBay but look pricey for higher spec.

Sorry guys I don't realise this thread was still running; in the end I took a MSI 754 mobo and accompanying processor with 1Gb of Kingston memory; the Intel solution from where I buy bits was a little more expensive, plus I've always used AMD in the past with no issues, but one day I will build an Intel set.

Nice one I hope it keeps you going for a long time, I just used the Intel stuff as an example tbh not a recommendation. Glad you got it all sorted out
