Intergrated Graphics Card

Hi, moving on from my recent post concerning building a budget PC for a typical teenager gamer - I'm thinking of maybe a dell for about

Badly.

Integrated video almost always means sharing system memory which means a performance hit on both the system and the video.

If there is any chance the system will be used for gaming then at least make sure it has the option of adding a PCI-e or AGP card.

I would never buy a motherboard with built in graphics unless it also have a way to put a graphics card in at a later date.


My sister-in-law have a Dell with built in graphics and even on simple things like DTP, it struggles when there are a load of graphics. the only thing that machine is good for is surfing the net and emailing and only just at that.

Always, always get a computer that the video card can be updated.

Pretty much all motherboards with on board video have PCI express slots these days it is worth keeping an eye on when buying though. It is a good way to buy a cheap PC if on a very tight budget that you can then stick a video card in at a later date besides as has been mentioned if you are buying a cheap PC its unlikely that sticking an expensive video card in it is going to make it much of a gaming machine even so ( TBH I would recommend sticking with onboard video if on a tight budget and get extra RAM stuck in it instead then put a video card in it a few months down the line

The budget is not that tight so got 1Gb of RAM with a 128Mb card.
