Windows Server 2k and UPS

Hiya,

We have a windows 2k server that we want to protect with a UPS, but once the power is restored it must turn back on and logon automatically as it is located in a mainly unmanned office.

I know I can get a UPS that will automatically turn the PC off via a serial or USB cable.
In the BIOS I can get set the PC to automatically turn back on after a power failure, but if I do that, will it try and turn on if there is power left in the UPS but the main power is still off?
Or am I better off setting it in BIOS so it turns on at a certain time each time, the server may be down for upto 24 hours but at least it will turn back on.
Or are there any UPS

I believe some UPS can be configured not to supply power after a powerfailure until the batteries have reached a certain percentage, which may help (the assumption being that if the batteries have recharged to that predefinded level then there must be a mains power supply present).

As for the automatic login, you need to add some registry entries

To lock the screen shortly after login just set the use profile up with a password protected screensaver set to come on after 1 minute.

The power fail is easy most UPSs will automatically restore power when its returned and the auto power up is in the BIOS under resume power state set it to power on after fail and that will fix that.

Can I ask why do you need it to logon automatically?

I wanted it to logon automatically as there will be no on there to log it on, but I am now owndering if this is necessary.
All it is used for when no one is there, is a mail server. Am I right in saying it will perform this function OK even if it is at the logon screen?

Programs like web servers, mail servers, etc can usually be run either as applications (started by a logged-in user) or as services (started by the system).

You should be able to check which is the case for you. (and fix the situation, if required)

You dont need to logon a server for it to work it'll quite happily sit there doing its thing once its booted up

Unless you have some dodgy app that requires a login first...

Well yes but there's ways around that of course but most server related stuff does not require the server to be logged on for this very reason of course
