Win98SE & Norton AntiVirus

Besides my WinXP machines, I also have a Win98SE pc which crrently has Norton AntiVirus 2005 which will run under Win98SE.

My licence is due to expire in about a month and whilst I can renew my subsription on-line, I cannot upgrade to a later version - such as 2007 - since that does not support Win98SE.

So what is my best choice? Do I renew on line, or is there an other AntiVirus product which will run under Win98SE and possibly cheaper than Norton?

I use this pc for various odd things, and Win98 is essential.

Yes, I am aware of that; it's just that I'm wondering whether I would be better served with a different supplier?

Personally I wouldn't bother renewing Norton when there are free alternatives out there.. AVG do a version for windows 98 I think, avast! also works with win 98

Just out of interest what has Win98 got that XP doesn't and is essential for?

In a standalone situation (which I doubt this is, given that the OP wants AV cover) W98SE can be far faster in a lot of situations, but it's more due to less security, add-ons etc.

Can't think of a good reason to have Pre-W2K in today's online world. Their security isn't up to it.


...having said all that, a lot of today's threats are aimed at W2K / XP, so maybe W9x/ME is safer in some ways.

This pc sits on my workbench and besides getting used for usual web stuff and email, also plays host to things like HamComm of which I have a fully licensed copy. http://www.pervisell.co.uk/ham/hc1.htmI Similarly another program which displays Facsimile Weather charts. These programs which are in MS-DOS require the completely non standard use of the PC's COM port. Basically the receive side of the MODEM consists of a 741 op-amp and a few diodes and capacitors. I built mine in a Cannon plug shell. The demodulation of fsk signals is then carried out by the COM port, rather cleverly in fact. The above site shows the display.

Once RFSpace have sorted out a US distributor who will export to UK it will also be running http://www.rfspace.com/sdriq.html although admittedly this unit and software will also run under WinXP or Vista.

some people don't have super fast wizzy machines, so they can't run XP, try running XP on a 233Mhz machine at a decent speed.

AVG or Avast will not work on 98/me, nor do antiver any more, I have been looking for antivirus to run on Windows 98/me for a while now and there don't seem to be any.
