Erase Hotmail Account?

I have several old Hotmail accounts that I created for various projects I was working on. These are no longer used nor needed, but I can't find any way to zap them out of existence. Is it possible, or do they live on forever in cyberspace?

You can close an account, plus they will eventually close it, if you don't sign in for a period of time.

120 days of inactivity and they'll permanently delete the account.

Those instructions are very old (and inaccurate). To close the Hotmail account now you need to click on the 'Account' link at the bottom of the Hotmail screen and the select 'Close Account'.
