Blue Screen Of Death

[link to this post]

Wierd one, my daughter, back from uni, went to print on the Brother laser. Got BSOD. Transferred to canon inkjet on usb, all fine. Back to laser and insert usb lead and BSOD. Changed lead, same again. Dell 530 and 30gig hd very nearly full. Pen drive in dell worked ok so its not likely the ports as tried them all.
Tried laser cable not plugged into laser and all ok, plugged into laser but not switched on BSOD. Tried another cable from scanner with laser, bsod.
Ran malwarebytes and Avira as they had not been updated and run since last home.
XP on update 2, will get it up to 3 when she has all the Uniwork on disk. as will do so with system restore.

Obviously something is happening when you plug the laser in, but the actual cause is not fully clear. You could read the dump files (using MS debugging tool) to possibly identify the cause. The dump file will sometimes clearly indicate the source of the bsod.

Downloaded 6.11 version for x86 and it just would not load windbg, just hung at this point. I think I'll wait to get her to copy all important bits before playing.
