Windows 7 - 4 questions to those in the know....

[link to this post]

Is the release date is now soon (22 Oct) ?

Is the classic start menu not going to be included (as per my beta) ?

Is IE7 not included in the UK (download only) ?

Is it really a stupid name (LOL) ?

TIA smile

All easy questions:
1 - Yes, at least that's what MS have said
2 - No, at least that's what MS have said at the moment (might change their minds)
3 - Maybe. But the EU have said they can't do that. MS should apparently offer choice rather than no choice - so expect IE, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Opera, and 20 browsers that currently have 0 market share but might complain if they are missed out (and everyone will blame MS if any of them don't work properly)
4 - Nothing wrong with calling it Windows 7 - better than giving it a name that has no relevance to the product. I mean what the hell have leopards got to do with operating systems?

NOTE: I have no axe to grind against Apple.

We will get Windows 7 'E' in Europe, which is a right pain in the **** for people who would like to upgrade from Vista. It prevents you being able to do a standard upgrade whilst keeping your settings. Basically, a clean install is required for an upgrade. Dumb EU regulators. I mean, a large number of people in Europe don't even use IE. The last stats relased in November 2008 have only 59% of consumers using IE, with Firefox on 31% (including me), Opera 5% and Safari at 2.5%. The whole thing doesn't really make sense.

I read that while IE 8 won't be installed by default with Windows 7, they will be including it on its own DVD / CD and possibly with alternatives to IE as well either with Win 7 and / or future releases but this is not confirmed yet.

What microsoft did to the internet with IE 6, is more or less unforgivable. And to fullly get rid of ie6 may take another 3 to 5 years.

The sad thing is that most people aren't aware how out of date ie6 is.

As others have said.

1. yes - but technet and maps customers will get their mits on win7 before this date. From june 26th most vendors will ship vouchers for win7 upgrade.

2. no classic taskbar .. That said the productivity increases has made the old takbar redundant imho

3 ie7 wasn't in the RC - it was ie8. European's will get no browser. Shame it isn't nots worldwide.

4. No, vista was a stupid name.
