Windows media centre will not start..vista

[link to this post]

Dont use this program much but i wanted to put some digital pictures on from my camera.

However when i click on the desktop icon windows media centre nothing happens and the program does not start.

Any idea why this is and is there some settings or something to change so i can open this program.

I have nero but i am not sure why that program would stop me opening the windows media centre [vista home premium]

cheers..

Come on people somebody must know some sort of fix for this.

I also have the actual disk for vista 64 bit and i have inserted the disk looking for the repair option but all i get is the option to reinstall vista........Sorry i am not going to be doing that .

Where is the option to repair certain files like windows media center without doing a complete reinstall.

Someone on another site told me to boot the pc with the disk in the drive and then i will see that option................No you dont ?

I can't help as one of the first things I disable on Vista is the absolutely useless Media Centre. Having done so, I have no problem whatsoever downloading pictures from a number of different cameras without it.

You can check for missing/corrupted system files by entering sfc /scannow from the Start>Run box. You will need admin priveleges to do so.

Cheers mate i have done that and it has found corrupted files but did not fix them.

I have a fuji f11 digital camera and obviously the software that came with it at the time [3 years back ] did not include a vista set up and install procedure.

been to the fuji website and there is a download for vista but i gave up after it was downloading a 8 meg file and telling me 2 hours...

Dont know why this media center has stopped working and it really bugging me.?

Does your Fuji have a card? Use a card reader to copy the files. Alternatively perhaps some generic PTP software will read from the camera.

The corrupted files report may be a clue. wink

As far as your photos are concerned, try opening Windows Photo Gallery and select File>Camera And Scanner Import. If your Fuji is connected and switched on, it should be listed there.

Cheers guys i managed to get the pictures from the camera using the usb lead provided and downloading the update for vista at the fuji site.

I have a 5in 1 card reader with this pc but it looks like the card in the camera dont fit into any of these slots [dont ask me why]

Its a 1 gig olympus picture card which is quite small to be honest and not like the cards i use in my Nintendo wii and other devices.

Have a good look at the camera card to see what type it actually is - could well be an XD card which is small.

Then check which cards your inbuilt card reader will accept .

Card readers for individual types of cards can be bought quite cheaply

To be honest mate i have not got a clue what cards this reader accepts because up until i wanted to put some photo on i have not used it.

I persume i need some sort of adapter to slot this card into from the camera and then into the reader on the pc.

Hi - couple of points.

I have a Fuji camera and the first time I tried to put the memory card in my pc's card reader I could not get it to work, until I inserted the card upside down to what appeared common logic. And it then read the card ok. On all the card readers I have seen, the Fuji style card normally goes in the top right hand (the smallest) slot, upside down if necessary, just have a look inside and see where the contacts line up.

The other option is to try use something else other than Media Center - which to me seems way over the top for picture viewing. Here's a cut and paste from the Vista Help Center, on how to change to another (more suitable) program. Sorry if this is sucking egg logic, but better supply everything rather than nothing.

Change the program that opens a type of file.

If you double-click a file in Windows and it opens in the wrong software program, follow these steps to choose the program you would prefer that file use. You can change this setting for an individual file, or you can tell Windows to open all files of that same type in the software program you choose.

Open the folder that contains the file you want to change.

Right-click the file that you want to change, and then, depending on the type of file, either click Open With or point to Open With and then click Choose Default Program.

Click the program that you want to use to open this file.

Do one of the following:

If you want all files of that type to open in the same software program, select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.

If you want only that file to open in the software program this one time, clear the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.
