problem with printer driver and vista

[link to this post]

I have hp photosmart 1000 printer attached to a desktop computer( win xp-he). The printer is shared with another desktop( win 2000) and a laptop ( win xp). However I have replaced the laptop with a new one running Vista. Vista requires a printer driver which HP does not provide. It seems that I have to buy a new printer unless somebody thinks of a way round this!! any ideas.

Hi, thanks very much for your reply. Though my problem is slightly different to those who connect their vista machine directly to a hp photosmart 1000 printer ( or any printer which HP decides not to provide a vista driver-too old!!). My vista laptop is wirelessly connected to a desktop via a router. The printer is connected to the desktop. For the benefit of those who have similar setup, I proceeded as follows: I installed hp 940c printer driver on my desktop (apparently it is the nearest to photosmart 1000 spec), ensured that it is shared and it is not the default printer. Then on the vista laptop, I searched for the desktop computer and any shared hardware includung the printers eg " hp 940c", and made it (hp940c) the default printer, and hey presto, I was able to print from the vista laptop!!. Of course, I have to switch the desktop and the printer on at the same time.
I hope this is clear
