Rate win7

Anyone care to rate win7 upgrade.

9 out of 10 so far. The only problem I have had is trying to triple boot with Linux and Solaris (it's easy to do via Grub, but then Windows Backup doesn't work and Windows won't sleep). Got Windows and Linux booting, but Solaris is a bit of a PITA.

Web browsing seems much snappier than the RC or my Linux installations.

Edit: I should have added - those Luddites who are staying with XP are making a big mistake. Windows 7 is so much better than XP; and at £45 it was a snip.

For the time being I will remain a Luddite,no harm in waiting till most of the bugs and security issues have been ironed out

I'll bet you any money you like that Windows 7 is more secure than XP. Any serious bugs have already been ironed out during extensive consumer testing.

The 64-bit version certainly has far less problems than the 64-bit version of XP did - and I resent paying for 4GB of RAM and not being able to use all of it, or the full power of my processor, with a 32-bit OS.

Things are a bit behind here , the local exchange was only enabled for UP TO 8Mbps just over 3 years ago

Been using Windows 7 Rc for a while now and I think it is pretty good, far better than Vista and I do prefer it in many ways to XP.

I got the Retail pro version delivered today, not installed it yet as I got things to back up, so I will do that tomorrow.

I hate marmite as well - never actually eaten any but I know I wouldn't like it if I did

I've been using Windows 7 for a couple of months now (fresh install) and its given my PC a new lease of life after Vista did its best to cripple it.

I lost count of how many times I had to do a fresh Vista reformat in the past 18 months or so. But Windows 7 has been a lot more stable. Its snappier, has some nice new features and has recognized all my hardware even when new drivers have not yet been made available by the manufacturer (i.e. my Canon printer).

Boot up is quicker (approx 25% for me) and file copying/searching all seems slightly smoother.

Would recommend to anyone fed up with Vista or who is about to purchase a new machine.

Yeah I've been running my server on it at home for a while now and it seems very good. For some reason the wifi on the server (it's actually a cheap laptop, lol) only runs at a few Mb/s but that might be a driver or card issue.

I run Vista on one of my development machines at work so I might upgrade that but actually that's been pretty good. The UAC isn't half as intrusive as 'the mob' would like to claim. It annoyed the hell out of me on one of the test machines but then I was manually messing about with the contents of Program Files\ and modifying security settings. Hardly surprising that it got arsey about it so I turned it off in the end.

FYI - it does require support from the hardware, not just the OS. My server laptop appears to have a 32-bit memory controller so even though I put Win7x64 on it it still only sees around 3.5GB. To be fair it was a very cheap laptop but it's worth noting for reference.

I did find vista pretty much ok, memory usage was a bit much, but i did have 4gb of ram to play with. I turned UAC off in the end, even with the sp1 making it less intrusive.

UAC on win7 is much better.

Things i don't like like about win7

-they altered favourites on explorer and i preferred how vista did it
-homegroups sucks because of its offline requirement. I wanted to map a linux box into the homegroup, and win7 wouldn't have none of it.
-win 7rc trashed the bootloader.
- 70 folder limit for the startmenu sucks

Are you sure that the other .5GB (I'm assuming that you have 4GB) isn't stuff like video memory?

It is far, far better than windows Vista, it may look like vista in many ways, but that is where the similarity ends.

Windows 7 is faster, seems to be more stable, and software I have got that would not work with Vista works with Windows 7. There are some nice features in it, whihc some are useful, others are not so.

I am glad I tried the beta version, it gave me a chance to try the O/S out for a while, so I know if it was worth buying or not. I am now a owner of Windows 7 pro. I am not a lover of Microsoft by any means, but they ahve certainly done well with Windows 7.

I am trying to think of any problems I have with it and at the moment I can't, now that is a novelty.

8 out of 10, based on my laptop. My desktop is yet to see win7 so it has not been tested under my mainstream usage (waiting for office 2010 since I dont want to put older office on and then upgrade it).

I agree with you. Not a great lover of Microsoft but have run the RC on an Acer Netbook. Was impressed and have now upgraded it to the release version.

On properties it shows 4GB Installed (2.98 Usable). It isn't shared graphics memory because DxDiag says that's 240MB.

I found a few articles on the web saying that Aero reserves some RAM but I'm using a basic scheme.

It's a different laptop but suggests that mine might have the same issue.

It's not a major problem since it's only running my music server. It's not a bad bit of kit for the money - it was about the cheapest laptop I could find a couple of months ago, lol. 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD, dual core something or other CPU. a tad under £300 if I remember correctly. Didn't come with an OS which helped.

I am waiting for the new version of Ubuntu and then I will stick that on my laptop. Give me time to sort out the stuff on the laptop I need to take off.

But yes, I am impressed with windows 7, this machine of mine seems to fly. I don't know if it is my imagination or if the released version of windows 7 seems to be better than the RC version I had.

Not got the upgrade but the full version of 64-bit Win7 Pro (it was £90 in a deal at PC World months ago -- one of the few good things they've done!), and so far I love it. Admittedly I've switched from 64-bit WinXP, which had very poor support (especially in terms of drivers), so anything's bound to be an improvement... except Vista, obviously

Only had one problem so far, an inexplicable freeze, but that may have been down to dodgy drivers for my LAN port, as something similar happened in the early days of XP64

I had a lot of freezes but seem to have got fewer as the days go on.

Interesting, I just tried the 64 bit version of the RC on Vmware player and suffered freezes. The host was fine (XP) but Win 7 would freeze now and again then continue. Still not sure if it's Vmware or 64 bit version. Using the 32 bit on MS Virtual PC and no freezes. Strange.

Never had a 64 bit OS before - Got one now and, apart from a couple of very minor niggles, it's good.

10 out of 10 here.

Vista is sheet. XP good. 7 great for gaming etc, and I love the full screen magnify.
