Windows 7 XP mode

Did not know where to ask this.
In XP mode do you still have to install a firewall and antivirus? I ask because, it looks like XP mode is using my firewall in windows 7.

The other question, when you tell XP how much RAM you want it to use, does it take it away from your real RAM? So if I have 2gb RAM for windows 7 and set XP mode to 1gb, I will only have 1gb to use on 7?

This VT XP mode thing is new to me. never had to use it before. Maybe it's best to just have a real XP and windows 7.

Hi ive been using XP mode all the way threw the beta and yes you do need to install its own anti virus you don't need a firewall as the windows firewall is good enough as for ram yes it dose use your system ram so if you want to use XP mode a lot id recommend upgrading the ram on your computer to cope better if you have a few apps running Microsoft recommend giving XP mode 2 gig of ram to its self I personally give it 1.5 and give my main computer 2.5 to use hope this helps.

Go to your user name in users and then into virtual machines and right click on "Virtual Windows XP" and select settings and you change the memory footprint in there

As for RAM well I only have 2gb and my motherboard don't seem to like more than 2 Dims. So will just have to run it on 1gb or 512mb.

I had'nt released until i got my copy of Windows 7 Home that you need Proffesional and above for windows xp mode! oh well.

Having tried XP mode in the beta I'd search very diligantly for another solution rather than using it. All VM software tends to be a little slower than the real thing, but performance in XP mode was dire. You'd probably be better off with Virtual Box and a real copy of XP (or 2000 - it's cheaper!).

You probably need to increase the RAM voltage and/or controller voltages in the BIOS. This is a very common problem, when driving more sticks of RAM frequently you need more voltage to drive them.

Also many DDR2 sticks are ideally run at 2.1v, whereas the JDEC standard is 1.8v which most motherboards default to. So look on the RAM labels and see what they're rated for and select the appropriate voltage in the BIOS - your problem will most likely go away.

Incidentally ensure you have the latest BIOS firmware version too.

That is why I went for the Pro version, not sure if I will ever need XP mode, but it is there if I need it.
