can this be right

My laptop with win 7 installed shows that the capacity of the hard disk is 283 GB. however the hard disk size is 320 GB. Do these figures make sense? I know formating will take some GBs, but surely not this much. Is there a way of verifying these figures.

Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_drive under the heading Capacity measurements.

Check My Computer/Manage/Disk Management that you haven't any unallocated space.

My 320GB hard disks show as 298GB, 283 does seem slightly low, even allowing the other partition Win7 creates.

Also the manufactures of the laptop can have a hidden partition to store the drivers and a uninstalled copy of windows to restore if things go wrong.

the windows 7 hidden partition is more for EFI, when it become more popular I think

you are right about the figures. after going to my computer>manage disk etc, there seem to be 14.65 GB unallocated. However I cannot delete it. Also I cannot extend the C drive to swallow it , the extend option is greyed out. Any ideas how to claim this 14 GB.It must have been allocated by Dell on installing Vista ( the previous OS).
