XP sp3 PC does not (always) shut down

[link to this post]

Any Ideas? I am using the Hive cleaner as suggested by Microsoft, but I still have to click twice to shut down 85% of the time, the rest is fine - also shut down is long, but I traced this to the page File, no page file, almost instance shut down.

Antivirus and firewall are a culprit for causing delayed/failed shutdown. I would check these first. Also check the event log for any errors which occur during the shutdown process.

But yeah, you're not alone, almost all of my XP installations have resulted in shutdown oddities after a few years of faffing.

I would agree. You need to shutdown some of the applications first before using the Start/Shutdown command. Always shutdown the same ones. If the problem goes away, then narrow it down. You may be able to unload/reload/upgrade the software in question and hence magically fix the issue.

I wish I could just do a clean install, somehow I trashed the Dell Revcovery disc.

No, just shutdown a set of the programs running manually, then shutdown the pc in the normal way. You can then see what program is causing the failure to shutdown. Once identified, just unload/reinstall that program or get an upgrade.

Had that trouble when I used to use XP.

I just made a desktop shortcut forcing a shutdown.
