Possible AVG / Zone Alarm browser issues

[link to this post]

I've had a few problems with Firefox hanging / stalling, call it what you will. I've tried various things to fix, or at least improve. It's somewhat better now, albeit after rebuilding my system twice.

However...

Last Saturday, looking for something else on the web, I came across a number of threads on the free AVG forum referring to stalling / freezing browsers since installing AVG 9.0 recently... Hmm I thought, so I looked around and decided to revert to AVG 8.5.

Big mistake. Whatever went wrong I'll never know but it left me with AVG erroring repeatedly which I couldn't prevent. In the end on Saturday evening I bit the bullet and started a(nother) rebuild of my system. Finished that on Sunday.

I've now seen this thread. And yes, I run free Zone Alarm with my paid for version of AVG.

It would seem AVG are admitting there is a problem; whether it's with AVG or ZA (as per the Microsoft upgrade 18 months ago that caused ZA to block internet access, ZA soon admitted it was their fault) I don't know. We'll wait and see.

I have been scratching my head on this also for the last 2-3 weeks. When using IE, pages would load, 1/2 load and now change when I typed in a new address into the www bar.

I have been using free zonealarm FW and free AVG anti virus for a number of years. Looking at the attached link, I removed AVG and installed a full trial version of Zonealarm. This is now performing a lot better... Not sure where I will go next.

FWIW.

I've been running AVG 8.5 for the past 2 months or so because of the problems I had earlier, but for the past week or two it's been reminding me to upgrade to V9.

I've just done this - I uninstalled V8.5 beforehand just in case update didn't work properly.

With all AVG components operative, and running Zone Alarm 8.0.298.000, so far so good. No sign of delays, hangs, or freezes in Firefox - I've left the AVG Safe Search add-in for Firefox enabled.

[fingers crossed]

Tony

I swore by ZoneAlarm and Nod32 for long enough, but when I got my new system (also Scan) they advised me AWAY from ZoneAlarm due to possible issues.

Been tunning Kaspersly IS (fw/av) for a wee bit now, and no probs. You can buy it from Scan around £15 - try the free trial first.

Worked here.

Miss nod and za... wink

Just upgraded another AVG pc from 8.5 to 9.0. This was not a happy camper. I removed 9.0 with all of the settings being removed. I then installed from fresh and everything looks ok now. I think, like you, in order to install AVG 9.0, you need to remove what you have already & then install from there, not upgrading.

I upgraded my XP Netbook yesterday from 8.5 to 9.0. Took the upgrade route and it appears to be ok...

I had the exact same issues with delays/hanging/staling in firefox and IE (I do have as well AVG 9 and ZoneAlarm) and all I had to do to solve these was to remove AVG and install AVAST; Now all is good.

I junked AVG on both my desktop and netbook PCs about a month ago and went to Microsoft Security Essentials. No problems - so far anyway.

I have free ZA and AVG on Win 7 with no issues and previously on Vista again with no issues. I only use IE so can't comment on FF.

Was Eclipse Home Option 1 & VM 2Mb
Now O2 standard

I had the same issue with browser (and some other things) no performing at all well.

For me the critical point came a couple of days ago, but was obscured by a change of ISP.
Because of that, I wasn't reading forum posts, and initially laid the blame to a networking problem or router problem (don't ask exactly why).
Finally, after postings on the AVG Free forums, I noted that the machine I have with Avast didn't have the same problems (but isn't configured to all my preferences ...), so removed AVG and installed Avast.
This exercise having achieved good results, I went on the 'fix' my wifes PC too.
