Windows installer

Hi all,
I'm running XP and everything was working fine.
I logged onto messenger and it stated I must download the update.
After downloading the update it tries to install and comes up with an error, about "windows installer" It tells me to go to windows update and it will automatically update the istaller. After doing this... CRASH!!!! the dreaded blue screen off death.
pc boots back up and continues to crash.
I then have to boot in safe mode and do a system restore.

Can anyone help with this windows installer problem, as I can't use messenger without it?

Assuming your PC seems to be running normally after your system restore, try installing the latest version of Windows Installer for XP (v4.5) from this direct link ... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942288/en-us

Then try the Messenger update again after the Installer has been updated.
