The ARP cache is a table which stores mappings between Data Link Layer addresses and Network Layer addresses.

The Data Link Layer addresses are usually MAC addresses and the Network Layer addresses are most frequently IP addresses.

I assume you have already cleaned out your cookies and temp files?

Hi,

Yes I've cleared out all the cookies and stuff. No help.

I have done the arpcache clearing and restarted PC, but its still the same.

Maybe I should get windows 7? Or will it be the same anyway?!

Thanks for the info.

Just as some further information, website loading seems faster when I turn first turn the PC on and seems to be slower a few hours later.

A worse version of this happened when I installed HTC Sync software, where websites just would not load at all because the software was taking up resources or something. A lot of people had complained about it on the net and said it was soemthing to do with the HTC stuff. That was resolved when I uninstalled it.

Might there be some program running which is slowing things down?

Another point is that when I first noticed it on IE, I started to use Firefox and the problem wasnt there. Then, as I used firefox more, it started happening on it too. Same with Google Chrome.

This is very annoying!!

Any suggestions??

Thanks for all the help so far!

Is it a wireless connection to the router?
If so check you've got a good signal, try a wired connection.
Have you got sufficient ram, not sure what is sufficient for Vista. I've got 2GB in my vista machine with no speed problems.

Other thing's you may wish to check:-
Uninstall sunbelt firewall, disabling a software firewall some times just isn't enough to check it's no causing problems.
Uninstall spybots inoculation, also disable tea timer if enabled.
Google toolbar, I've often removed this from friends computers to help speed thing up. It always returns though smile

I would run your hijack this log through Bleeping Computer and remove everything that is not required to start. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42... for the tutorial

Also look at your start-up files using CCleaner. I did that with my wife's laptop and now hers boots quicker than my XP machine, which is annoying!!!

Hi all,

I have just got back from work and thought I would try one of the suggestions: uninstalling Kerio Firewall.

I started up windows in safe mode with networking, and websites were SUPER fast loading with none of the problems I described.

I then got rid of Kerio, and its working great now. Thanks a lot NPR!!!

I have had similar successes in the past on changing virus scanners, so I'm still a bit apprehensive, but it seems to be going well. I will update in a few days with the final verdict.

Now, I just need a new firewall. Any suggestions for a free one that wont block up my system? What's the peer opinion on windows firewall?

Thanks to everyone for all your suggestions, and for the time you took to help me.

Sincerely,

Luc

My vote is vista / windows 7 firewall or nothing if behind a router firewall. Remember the router firewall will protect against inbound threats, you only need to stop any acquired malware from making outbound connections and then only if the AV doesn't catch it.
Unfortunately vista's firewall needs a bit of effort to set up, the site in my sig may help a little with this.
