Which one will a PC boot from?

I plan to change my PC's drive to 1TB. I'll install it in place of the current drive then install XP on it. When it's up and running I'll connect my old drive to transfer over all that needs to be transferred.

I have a question as to what will happen with both drives connected, and the old one still being a bootable drive.

Will the PC boot of the correct (new) drive?
Or will it give me a boot menu?
Or do I need to set the BIOS boot order to make sure?

Set it in the BIOS to be sure.

some motherboards allow you to press a function key to give you a menu at boot, on mine it is F8, but as been said maybe better to set it in the bios anyway

You will need to at least check the BIOS's boot order to ensure the new drive is the first one on the list of hard drives. The old one being disconnected when you install Windows on the new one does not mean that it isn't still the first priority when it is reinstalled.

The F8 is only a one time thing, you press F8, select what you want to boot from and away you go, next time the computer restarts it will boot from the original drive set in the bios.

I noticed that setting the boot drive in the bios is so complex now, on mine you got to menus, one for setting the hard drvie to boot from and then another for setting the devices order.

I remember a few years back when I used to always put the floppy and Cd drive as the first boot, Now I just put the hard drive as first boot. Needing to boot from optical drives is not needed these days unless you have to reinstall the Os.
