Downloaded this for 2 pcs and both failed to install with a 0X80004005 error

Installed via Windows Update without problem (although the download was a bit slow - I guess the servers are being hit hard). System seems snappier now, but that's probably just wishful thinking.

I have noticed a decrease in memory usage after booting up (X64 Ultimate), from 1.7Gb to 1.4Gb with no other changes other than the SP.

I think i had simliar problem, I got a fatal error message when it was applying part of the service pack update after first reseting the pc.

Result being that i had to reset my computer then do a system restore to get back in to my pc as it failed to boot in to windows.

So be warned people make sure you have a fall back plan as there is a good chance installing it will fail and you won't be able to get in to windows!

It took an hour to download and install for me this morning, although I now found out there is an ongoing problem with BT broadband in London and the southeast which also may have had a hand in it.

Mine was going slow too, MS servers will have been hit hard

Apparently Microsoft don't like my backup method.
I got a 0x800F0A12 error running the SP1 install file because "A disk management tool from another software manufacturer was used to copy (or clone) the disk or partition on which you’re trying to install SP1"

Yes, I regularly clone the HDD because it has several OS on it and cloning the entire disk is relatively painless.
Microsoft's answer to solving this problem is to reinstall Windows 7. Not likely!!
Of all the OS on the HDD only one has a habit of wrecking the others when not being installed first - Windows.
I am certainly not reinstalling and I am sure many others when having problems updating will not update. So, that's another generation of Microsoft OS out there not patched and vulnerable.

I suspect the real issue here is that I am running one of the clone drives and not the original install drive. I will try installing SP1 again when I next make backups (yes MS, cloning is a backup method). There are only two backup drives so if after the next backup SP1 still fails it will mean the original drive is the other one!

My laptop is only a few months old. Do I really have to install SP1 or will it wait for a few weeks/months? I have the 64bit version. Two other updates came through at the same time - can I install these without SP1? The reason I'm a bit iffy about it all is that I had trouble with an XP Service Pack update (2 to 3) which gave me BSOD and other errors including serious lockups. Never really got to the bottom of it and managed for a couple of (trouble-free) years without upgrading after doing a System Restore.

Just be sure you have a back up image before you start installing sp1 in case things go pear shaped.

Well I found the cause eventually.
Rather than having to reinstall like MS say all that is needed is to use Disk Management to mark the system partition as active.
Wonder if they will change their advice to reflect this ....

download link doesnt work.

it asks me to download tool to check windows is genuine.

when I run it, the tool says its obselete and I need to download newer version.

Strange, that page with the validation tool worked ok for me and I got the download.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 may fail to install properly on systems which have had the Driver Sweeper utility from Phyxion run against the Windows image. You could possibly encounter errors 0x800f0a13 or 0x800f0826 in your \Windows\Logs\CBS.log file that is similar to the following:

I eventually got it working with IE.

FF has the tool issue I posted.

IE initially wouldnt even show the continue button, I disabled simple adblock to make it show up and then installed the active x checker which allowed me to download.

Normally on service packs I reinstall windows using a integrated dvd, but in this case I am just going to install the service pack.

Why does it takes ages to actually start the download. Does it check against every installed update before the download starts ?

Why is there no facility to tell the user how its going, instead of being stuck at 0% for ages ? The same for the actual installation...

Yeah, it checks to see what is installed and then compile a list of what is actually needed (useful really, as it could be an almost 900MB download otherwise)..
