Having installed Kindle on my Windows XP desktop-pc, I am wondering how I can save a book to my pc's hard-drive since Amazon has so many free e-books which it is willing to send me, without charge, over the web.

You just go onto Amazon and log in, order whichever one of the free books you want or as many as you want and it should automatically download for you to read with the Kindle software.
I've not used Kindle for PC, but you likely have to link the software to your Amazon account
With the Kindle itself the book just downloads automatically via wireless or 3G (Whispernet)

When you buy (even free) an eBook from Amazon you can choose in a "Deliver to" drop-down list to "Transfer via Computer".
There are many other eBook sites, like ManyBooks & FeedBooks, where you can download to your PC, just like any file, in many formats.

Agreed! Those are the best 3 sites I found.
EDIT: I find FeedBooks is better with Chapter Markers.

look for a program called Calibre, it allows you to manage all your ebooks, supports several formats and can convert different formats to .mobi which the kindle understands.

Ta! I've got it.

Maybe I should have emphasised that I am not repeat not a Kindle owner. I have not purchased a Kindle, I have no Kindle software, what I have done however is install Kindle on my pc. (If I understood how to embed a smiley at the tail of my tale I would do so here.) LittleSeen

If you have no kindle software than what "kindle" is installed on the PC?
Lot's of smilies
There is a page somewhere that tells how to do smilies - in general just remove the dash from what you would normally do (so for a smiley face that would normally be remove the dash and it will come up as )

I smile?
But you said you have no kindle software but that you have kindle software... You seem to be contradicting yourself - hopefully the smilies will help relieve your confusion
