I've always installed newer versions without uninstalling previous versions. I don't think I've had any real issues.
That's Java's own version of DLL hell

The only issue I've had is that the Java icon always appears in the sys-tray even though I've unticked the box "Place Icon In System Tray".

In my experience it is best to delete the older versions and install the latest version periodically - I have seen many XP computers with more than one "Java Runtime Environment update xx" entry in control panel.

I bet the reason they don't uninstall the old version is so that Java programs that target specific versions don't have to be updated as often. Kind of makes a mockery of security updates tbh.

This used to be a problem on my XP PCs: Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs showed several versions of Java installed. However, this no longer occurs for me.

I cannot recall doing anything to change this behaviour and had assumed that recent JRE installation kits handled removal of old versions automatically, but the comments above imply that this is not so.

Which folder do you install Java into? On my PC the folder is: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6. Could the multiple versions problem arise from update-specific folders, e.g. ...\jre6u25 or similar?

Sun Microsystems has released another version of its Java software client. The update, JRE6 Update 10, contains no new security fixes to the most recent version, JRE6 Update 7, but it does appear to fulfill a promise the company made long ago to stop littering users' PCs with outdated, insecure versions of the software.

does anyone else have this problem?

when i update java the old versions stay behind eg. in firefox I have 10 java's installed and I manually disable the old ones so dont conflict.

You can normally disable or remove an add-on in Firefox. However thats not the case with the Java Console add-ons. You cant get thet Remove button for java.

This tip works for me. You can read more at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#Multiple_Java_Console...

This should work

1. Close Firefox
2. Go to the directory C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\extensions (if using 64-bit Windows) or
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions (if using 32-bit Windows)
3. Delete all directories whose names start with: CAFEEFAC
4. If you are prompted for administrator approval, say yes
5. Start Firefox again and that should be it.

If you find that the current latest java is no longer there just re-install. You should now only show the current one.

Hope the above helps

Ive been searching this annoyance for alongtime.
thanks BP1 this trick of yours worked a treat

Glad it worked for you. You would think java could remove the old multiple versions on new updates by now.

Hope the above helps others to
