Strange Folder options problem

[link to this post]

Windows 7 Starter edition on the two computers I'm comparing here. Two problems here which are closely related to each other I believe, any help would be appreciated.

Firstly, I noticed this week that when inside a folder, sorting it by "Date Modified" and with the view set to "Details" the files would apparently disappear. However, by going to an application, let's say Microsoft Word, and saving into that location will show all the files. Only way to make the files appear again, would be to change the option of sorting by "Date Modified" into "Sort by Folder".

So with that confusion, I decided to look into the "Folder and Search options". On clicking the view tab I'm then confronted with something I have never seen before. All of the options have either a "ON" or "OFF" at the end of them, depicting which ones are obviously on or off. I compare this to another computer of mine and the settings themselves are exactly the same but the "ON" and "OFF" aren't on the other computer.

So, the problems I would like to rectify. How, and why do I get the files to stay there when sorted by "Date Modified" and secondly, why is the folder options showing "ON" and "OFF". Here is a LINK with what I'm seeing.

I wonder if it's one of those strange usability settings? Perhaps for people who can't see ticks or filled circles. No idea.

The strange this is, I have two computers, well Netbooks, set up exactly the same and both using Windows 7 Starter and one has the problem and the other doesn't. I can't remember this happening before and have only just noticed it this week, but that's not to say that it wasn't happening before.

On the 1st part: Maybe your Bags are corrupted. See here for a related problem I had: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/win...

For some reason, and although I've played around with this all week it's finally remembering the folder settings. However, the next thing is to get rid of the ON and OFF bits at the end of the lines. I've found that it also displays it on the Visual settings. Again, here is a LINK. It's nothing crucial but it's bugging me as to how it's changed on this computer. Once again, any suggestions greatly appreciated!

As it seems pervasive, it's got to be an Ease of Access setting. Have a look at those and see if any is set inadvertently.

I've looked in Easy of Access but can't seem to see any settings which would suggest to putting an "ON" or "OFF" at the end. It only, by the looks of it, to be on those two, as I can't think of anywhere else where you have an option of having the settings on or off. I don't even remember going into Easy of Access or changing any of the settings at all! Any more suggestions?

Internet Explorer Options (or other Browsers?)?

Looked there but again it's knowing which setting it is. It's not going to be as simple as "turn the on and off feature off". If someone could give me a rough idea of where to look?

Sorry, all I meant was it might be another example of where you might see those "ON/OFF"s. I probably got mixed up with your preceding post.

The usability options are the place to start - however that type of on or off text is intended for those with sight difficulites where an option setting is "Read the Text and thats the path to explore in those options - in other words have you set the option for the user to use an external program to "Speak the highlighted Text"

Yeah the ON and OFF's are also showing up in Internet explorer in the Internet Options and advanced tab. I've restored those to default in case it was something in there but still the same. Surely there must be a setting somewhere but I haven't changed anything knowingly as I only use this laptop when I haven't got access to my main one!

Had a look and there's no differences between the two computers which are both running Windows 7 starter. The conundrum continues....

I've just discovered I've got this happening on one of my Desktop machines and in my case I have tracked the cause down to the fact that I've got the Microsoft's Speech recognition programme running on this machine.
Turning off the Speech recognition removes the 'On' and 'Off' words from the folder View options.

OK so we might be getting somewhere. I've never used the speech recognition software before. So if you could just talk me through exactly where you went and what setting you turned off then I shall give it a go! Much appreciated!

As it looks as if you've got speech recognition turned on, you'll be able to understand...grin

You should find a tray icon in the Notification area of the Taskbar, right click this icon and select 'Exit'.

You then need to go to Control Panel>Ease of Access>Speech Recognition then select 'Advanced Options' at the top left of the window then uncheck 'Run Speech recogntion at Startup' under User Settings to prevent it from running.

I've looked at Speech recognition wasn't running. So I looked into the Ease of Access settings and it wasn't set to run at startup. So, to make sure I wasn't missing anything I enabled it, restarted the computer and then checked to see if the ON and OFF's were still there. They were. Disabled the settings I've changed and it's still there. Next suggestion Bit odd that you have had the same problem but with something that was enabled. I don't even know what to search on Google as I'm not sure what they're called apart from ON and OFF's!!

Unfortunately nothing! I think I've restored all the default settings I possibly could. Next step would be to restore the computer to factory settings...something which I'm not really keen on doing for something so small, yet so annoying!

Haha brilliant! Not that I was using the magnifier, and never have, but turned it on and then turned it off and it went! Thank you so much!

Now, to the second problem, why does "Arranging by Date Modified" make the files disappear inside a folder? Have tried restoring the bags as one user suggested but that hasn't done the problem.

Once again, thank you for all the help.

Try right clicking in any bit of the white area on the right hand side of an open window and select Group by > None

Try creating a system backup and include personal folders. Create new account(s), delete old accounts and then transfer files back in from backup.

Unfortunately, when arranging by "Date modified" is selected, the group by does not appear. Looks like I shall try the last resort before restoring, which is to create another user!
