problem with drive sharing

I have an external disk for my desktop ( xp). When I introduce sharing for the disk, I can access the disk from my laptop ( win 7).However when I turn off the desktop machine the sharing arrangement is turned off. I have to do the process of sharing every time I turn the machine on !!. Is there a way of telling windows that I want the arrangement to be permanent.

The problem is that you are sharing a removable drive. Because it is, effectively, removed every time you reboot the share is not persistent.
