I'll be moving from XP Pro to W7, 64-bit,in the next few weeks. I'm wondering what alternatives, preferably free, are available for three of the programs I use.
Dreamweaver MX 2002. I only use it as a code editor for HTML/PHP/Javascipt, I don't use it for actual design.
Nero 6, really only use it for the actual burning of discs - ImgBurn?
Photoshop Elements 4 - I've got V6 but don't like its black screen.
Suggestions (polite please  ) would be appreciated.

Bluefish is a pretty good code editor; you might like to check it out.
ImgBurn is all I need, together with native Windows 7 support.
Gimp is a pretty fine image manipulation program, and is getting better all the time.
And they are all free, so you're not going to lose anything by trying them. Isn't life marvellous!

I'd seen Gimp and it looked ok but I didn't want to lead anyone on that one.
Bluefish looks ok. With Dreamweaver I've created a number of 'sites' which are all local to my PC (I don't use remote sites with it) and can readily switch between these sites. Is this straightforward with Bluefish? [Edit:] This would be similar to Dreamweaver's Site Manager

Dreamweaver and elements will work ok on 64 bit windows 7 but Nero 6 won't. Windows 7 has very good inbuilt burning software.

I use Imgburn for complete disk copy etc. but use Infrarecorder for normal CD and DVD burning

I've been looking Bluefish. I like the way it block structures the file display, very handy.
My real problem with it is that I can't seem to get to handle a site in the way I like (or am used to). I have top level folders which contain all the files for a site. I hoped to be able to point Bluefish to the appropriate top level folder and then open the files beneath as and when I wanted to. But at the moment I can't see any way of doing that.
The on-line only (I think) is not very helpful, the New Project description seems to allow one to specify a top-level folder, but the actual New Project dialog doesn't, indeed is completely different. It looks as if the manual is way out of date and less than helpful.
I'll continue to explore it.

I've used Komodo (the free version) for a while. It's pretty much a glorified version of Notepad - the usual IDE coding stuff but no screen painter. Its HTML is good, the in-line help on CSS3 is not quite as good - a lot of vendor specific options always flag up as errors. The built-in page viewer seems to be an old version of Opera which means that you have to be careful to check HTML5/CSS3 pages against the real browser. I'd happily recommend Komodo but, of course, each to their own
2Mb/s? Not in my lifetime!

I don't use my current editor for anything but editing so ability to view page is irrelevant to me. I have my PC set up as a simple server with IIS and PHP and can see changes immediately via local site using any of the browsers I have installed.
The only missing thing I've found so far is the ability, as in Dreamweaver, to drop down an options list when I type an ampersand. I can't find an add-on that works and does the same sort of thing, it would be handy but by no means a show stopper.
I'll probably use it when I have to do some site updates early next week and see what's what.

W7 arrived today from Amazon. Something had been dropped on it so that the plastic DVD case was cracked and splintered up against the DVD surface! It's on its way back for a replacement.

I started to install that earlier. After 3-4 hours, including massive downloads and 3 reboots, it still isn't installed so I'm now cancelling it, that also seems to be taking an age.
All seems very good reason not to use it.

Did you use the web installer? Try downloading the all-in-one ISO file (larger download, but quicker and more straightforward installation), burn to DVD and then install VWD from that.
